PT update

Let me start by saying I give all you moms that have done this a TON of credit. It was a long weekend and I cleaned up a lot of pee.

The first day he didnt get it at all and peed everywhere.  But I could time when he was peeing. So on the second day I set the kitchen timer and took him to the potty every 30 min (just to sit) He finally peed that night on the potty-WOOP!

I was super hopeful (but exhausted) for sunday. He had 3 accidents before lunchtime which is when I threw in the towel. I couldn't do it anymore.

I am going to try putting him on the potty first thing in the morning and before bath time. Maybe invest in a potty chart. Daycare said they would help us also. I may try the 3 day method again in feb (he'll be 2.5)

Re: PT update

  • He is young still. I think your attitude is good - don't make it a power struggle.

We were most successful when daycare was doing it. Peer pressure works. All the kids learn together and get stickers. Just keep it up at home :)

  • Awww...Give him a few months and try again. I agree, he's still young. I keep being told by all my friends with older kids that most of the time they aren't really ready until they are closer to 3 years old. My Sister tried PT my neice about 3 or 4 times starting at age 2 and she really didn't get it until she was just over 3 years old.

  • You're an All Star A! He will get it, and with the help of daycare it will happen sooner than you think. I love the sticker chart thing, that's what my mom did with me (well it was a sticker book, but yanno), and I did it with a little girl I used to watch all the time. A is a smart little dude, he'll get it. xoxo

  • I agree with the daycare thing. Start when they start and try to use the same reward method. That is the only thing that worked for DS.

I used pull ups with the cold feeling when they got wet.

You are a brave sole to go right to regular undies.

  • Thanks ladies!

In his room at daycare there is one girl who is currently potty-training. So maybe that will help. She is 2.5

Do you think I should start putting him in pull ups? Rather then diapers? I could finish up my diapers and order pull-ups from amazon.....just a thought

Lisa-I have also heard that 3 is the magic #!!!!

  • don't do pull ups until he is potty training actively/regularly. they do not hold the amount of liquid a diaper does - they aren't meant to.
  • my friend just told me about the potty watch.  (layla is all about clocks and telling time now, so i think this may do the trick for her.)

  • it's so frustrating right?  i took out "the potty movie" from the library the other day.  sue loved watching it and copying what the girl was doing and before i could stop it- there was sh*t on my carpet!  no fun.  i think we just have to suck it up and wait until they are ready.  but you my friend get an A for effort.  (hugs)

  • don't be so hard on yourself.  You are a super mom!!!  You're braver than I was to even attempt the 3 day PT.  A will get it eventually.  I have to agree that 3 is the magic number.  The day after A's 3rd birthday it was like a switch went off in his head and he was PT in 2 days (day & night).  Daycare is a huge help.  Ditto the peer pressure aspect.  They certainly learn a lot from watching others.  I also put A on the potty at bath time, before bed & in the morning.  Even if he didn't go we made it part of our routine.

IMO pull ups are a waste.  We went straight from diapers to undies.  It gave A a goal to shoot for and he loved picking them out.  I think the pull ups just prolong PT - again, jmo.

I 1000% support a sticker chart/prize system.  You don't have to invest a lot in one.  Just pick up a piece of oak tag & draw one out  That's what I did.  I gave stickers very time he sat on the potty.  Then once he got the hang of it I switched to one sticker for every time he peed on the potty, two stickers for every poop.  When he got to 5 stickers he was able to pick from the prize bag - which was filled with dollar bin prizes.  I started the sticker chart with A around this age and did it up until he was 3. Sounds like a long time, but some days he would get 1 or 2 stickers other days none.  It was good reinforcement until he was 100% ready to make the switch entirely.

  • My friends son was impossible with it.  He flat out told his mom "When I am 5" So one day he asked for money.  She told him he had to pay for diapers now.  He potty trained the next day because he didn't want to separate from his money.  Smart cookie.  He knew what to do but didn't want to stop doing what he was doing to pee. He was 3.5

I am doomed, my siblings and I were the worst.

  • K will go on the potty if you put her on it, but hasn't quite grasped the concept of using the potty regularly.  She probably uses it 2x a day with daycare and once at home.  Last week I had to keep her diaper off of her because of a nasty diaper rash, and she knew she going to pee because she would run into the bathroom and cry for a diaper, just not sit on her potty.  All well, one day.
