Anyone use Peapod delivery? Question about prices....

Peapod is having a special where you can get free delivery for 60 days and $20 off the first order for new customers. I thought having groceries delivered is something I should try to see if it saves me time and if it works for me.

However, as I was adding things to my cart, I noticed that it seems like all of the prices are higher than what I normally pay at Giant. It also doesn't look like they offer the normal discounts that you get with your Giant card (for example 10 yogurts for $5).

For those that use Peapod regularily and know the Peapod vs. Giant in-store prices, do you think this is the case? I'm not sure if maybe I haven't been watching prices closely enough or whether the Peapod prices are truly higher. I like the idea of ordering groceries online but if I have to pay 10%-30% more plus a delivery fee, then it won't be worth it for me.

Re: Anyone use Peapod delivery? Question about prices....

  • I don't use it regularly, but I did use it last year for Thanksgiving just because I had to buy so much stuff.  Most of the prices were higher online than they were in the store.  Not to mention that I double tipped the driver as it was the day before Thanksgiving, so all in all it cost much more than a trip to the store would have.

It was really convenient and with family in from out of town I found that it was worth it for the holiday, but not sure it is worth it to just do standard grocery shopping that way all the time.

  • I never noticed the prices being higher (but I will say I could not tell you how much something normally costs).  But, if you enter your Giant # you should receive all the promotional sale items.  i am also pretty sure you can use coupons.

I never tip the driver as I was specifically told not to (from the website).  But I have not ordered through peapod in about 1.5 years.

  • Okay, thanks ladies. Next time I go to Giant I'll keep my receipt and then compare prices from there. It seems like the prices are quite a bit higher but maybe I haven't been paying attention. I know that the prices of a lot of things have recently gone up at all stores.

  • We did Peapod for about 8 months after the babies arrived b/c we were just so overwhelmed. I found the prices to be about the same although they don't offer the same sales as in the Giant flyer. I actually asked Peapod about this and they said they confirmed that they have different sales than the flyer occasionally--sometimes their prices are higher and sometimes they are lower.

We found it to be super convenient when it was so hard to get out of the house with both babies. Eventually, we got tired of paying for delivery (we did the first 60 days free and then started paying) and now we're back to doing our shopping at Costco and Target. We do, however, still use it when we travel on the weekend and arrange for delivery on Monday nights. It prevents that situation where you get home from a trip and there's no food in the house.

  • We use it--it's nice on weeks when we don't have time to shop.

As for the prices, there are special Peapod specials every week (you'll get e-mails). Lots of 10 for $10 on fruit, canned goods, yogurt, etc. and we just got boneless skinless chicken for $1.99/lb.

And you can definitely use your bonus card.

  • Thanks ladies. I'll check out the Peapod sales. I agree that after a weekend away, it would be nice to have delivery on a Monday. Also, during the weeks that my husband travels, there's no way I can get to the store so that's the other reason I'm thinking of it.

  • not sure if there is a Harris Teeter near you but I love their pick-up service. I order online and then it is loaded into my car :-) I usually pick it up on the way home from work.

  • I never noticed the higher cost and sometimes there are online deals that you don;t get in the store.  Truthfully the convenience is so worth it to me I would still do it even if it cost me 10 or 15 more so I don't have to spend over an hour at the store.

I am a little late- but ditto this.  I found Peapod to be more expensive, and HT's Express lane has the actual prices in store, and their online shopping reflects the sale prices. Your first trip is free, and they won't take any tips.  The Olney and Rockville (near white flint) stores offer it, not sure which other ones do.  They have you pay at the car, so you do not need to do anything but roll down your window.
