Cleaning laminate wood floors?

So, we have laminate wood in our family room and kitchen. We have two dogs, and there are paw prints all over the place, and water marks from them dripping their water all over the kitchen floor. We bought a swiffer wet jet and that thing blows. It leaves a film and you have to press down so hard to actually get it clean. Has anyone found anything that works really well and doesn't leave a film? I really don't want to have to clean them on my hands and knees.... Do I need one of those steam mops or something? Help! :)

Re: Cleaning laminate wood floors?

  • I bought a Rubbermaid (I think) one from Sam's and it came with 2 microfiber pads.  It cleans much better than the Swiffer and you can put whatever solution into it that you want.
  • We had laminate in our rental townhouse before we moved to Omaha. I swore it would be the death of me. Here is what I learned:

-Clean it with either warm water and vinegar (the smell goes away) OR Bona Laminate Floor Cleaner (You can get this almost anywhere).

-When I was done mopping--I had to get on the floor and towel dry the whole thing. That was the only way I wouldn't get spots from cleaning.

-I have the Shark Steam Mop but it seemed to leave streaks.

Basically, I always wrestled with having it look "spotty." From water drips to footprints, it never looked good. Hope that helps.

  • I'm not sure where the hubs got it, it's designed like a Swiffer, but the pad is a reusable, washable one.  I love it (as much as one can love a cleaning product).  I just use a mix of vinegar & water and it seems to do the trick.
  • We have a steam mop. I threw out all my swiffers. I love this thing!

  • I don't have laminate -- but I use the Shark Steam Mop for my wood and ceramic tile floors. If you go with the Rubbermaid mop (which is just like the Swiffer WetJet) there was a coupon in the Sunday paper and Target has a coupon on their website that you can stack it with :) I'm thinking about picking one up for the times I don't feel like hauling the Shark out.
