Need gift advice STAT!

Hi.

So DH's birthday is tomorrow, and I got him tickets to a New Orleans Brass/Jazz band (one of his favorite things) that is coming here in April. I must have gotten a wee bit overexcited about this gift because I have been telling him "it's the best bday present I ever got you!". (<-- bad idea, don't ever do this).  So, this morning he was feeling kind of down (post-awesome vacation blues kinda thing) and I asked if he wanted his gift early. Gave it to him, and he was happy I guess but kinda like (a) this is not the best present EVER and (b) wanted some instant gratification of sorts since the show isn't until April.

I don't want him to sound ungrateful because he said all the right things, but I could tell that, although he liked it, he wasn't as overjoyed as I'd hoped, and it didn't brighten his day as I wanted.

SO if you made it through all that, I need a supplementary gift, and I need it now!!! Restrictions:

Must be around or under $100, since ya know I already bought one gift; must be available at a store and not something you have to order; must be something he can use and enjoy immediately, but not something he NEEDS.

He likes electronic-y things, computers (but not video games), cooking, and most guy-type stuff except he's not really a sports fan. Oh and he's a lawyer.

okay - GO!

  • Does he have a kindle/tablet sort of thing?

Hmmm cooking....is there a gadget he's mentioned? like oh it would be SO much easier if I had X while making dinner? Is there a new type of cookng he wants to try? A cook book for that? Or the proper pot?

Here is my problem. He has like every gadget I can imagine, and although I know he would like something new and fun, it's not like there's anything in particular he has mentioned. So yeah if you have any cool obscure cooking tools that are fun I'd love to hear them! And he has like every cook book ever. And his mom is sending 3 more. Ugh! Maybe a pot.....hmm...

  • As a cook myself, I LOVE getting new kitchen gadgets! My FAVORITE that I have ever gotten was my electronic pressure cooker. You can find it on Amazon for about $75, and it is also in many stores I am sure. It pressure cooks, slow cooks, steams, browns, warms (like, keeps soups warm if you are entertaining). All kinds of things! Plus, it is WAY easier to use than the normal pressure cookers. I seriously use it at least once a week!

  • Is there a cooking class or a local restaurant that offeres a kitchen tour & lessons? I love to cook & would LOVE to get something like that.

  • is there a butcher you use that you could get him a gift card or buy some really awesome meats you don't normally get (ie rack of lamb, filet mignon, etc)? I gave DH a rack of lamb for Christmas last year and we cooked it together and had a really nice meal and time together. Seafood might be another idea on the same vein since its often pricey.Good luck!!

  • These are all great ideas, thank you!!! My concerns with a gift certificate or class is that he'll feel that same :"but I want to play with it NOW" ---- BUT I am going to keep those in mind for Christmas for sure!

I'm off to the store to hopefully get inspired -- cross your fingers for me!
