Working from Home

I was wondering if anyone on this board worked from home. I know it's 9-5 so probably most of you have full-time or part-time jobs outside the home, but if there is anyone who does work from home. What do you do? Do you like it? What education was required? How did you get into it? I'm just looking for some information on jobs working from home. Thanks.

Re: Working from Home

  • I work in marketing. I did the same job before and just transitioned into a WAH role. I think that most people who have a 9-5 job at home have similar experiences. The more valuable, unique, or rare your skills are the more likely you can find a WAH role. We do not accept anyone who is just starting out as WAH folks at my company.

I have a BS and MA + 6 years experience before getting this particular job.

I have very mixed feelings about working from home. My 2 kids are at home with a nanny. This worked beautifully for 18 months, but now my older child is having a hard time with me being home but not being accessible to her. I do love having no commute and having more flexibility in my day. While I have always taken a lunch break I can obviously do more on my lunch break at home than I could in the office.

I got this job from a recruiter

  • What is your impetus for wanting to work from home? Do you have a job currently? Are you a SAHM? Do you just hate the commute? Do you just want something different?

If you're a SAHM looking for extra income, there are some suggestions on the SAHM board on the Bump.

If not, all I can say is I freelance for my old company. They typically put me on 3-month on-demand contracts. Some weeks I work around 8-12 hours, some weeks not at all. It works well with my toddler's naptimes, and my company is happy to have someone who knows the place to deal with the ins and outs of their projects.

I"m a medical writer, BTW. I really like it. An advanced degree (MD, PhD, nursing, or PharmD) is required. I carried over from when I worked FT in the office.

  • I have a staffing position that started as a position int he office.  Once there were changes within the office I transitioned to WFH.  I love it!  I leave on my lunch and go running - don't have to play the workplace politics game - etc.
  • I work for a large IT company where the norm is working at a client site or working from home--very few people in my division have an assigned desk in an office building anymore.

The bulk of the internal support functions are WAH--contracts, legal, finance, marketing, sales, procurement, etc. All require a degree and work experience in the area of expertise.

It does allow for more flexibility, both ways--yes you can run errands/workout/do housework on breaks but it also means work expects you to be available more, not just the standard office hours.

    This is very true.

  • I worked from home for the past 4 years in my last job as a Project Manager.

Now I work in the office and I do really miss working from home. However, I was just thinking today though how much faster things get done (by others) when I'm in the office and can walk to someone's desk or office to ask questions or get things moving (I still work as a PM -- of sorts).

  • I work for aetna health insurance in the precertification dept. After 3 yrs of being in the office I been working from home since 2008. I have a B.A. in psychology but there is no degree requirement for my position. With the economy they have been sending almost everyone to WAH to save money (there's 40 people in my dept at like 5 people still in the office) It saves on the commute especially with SS7 and SS13 with getting them ready for school and parent teacher conferences but I do miss the potlucks and face to face action with my coworkers. Aetna has ton of positions in almost every dept thats WAH, customer service, data entry, claims, nursing, precert, marketing, etc.

  • I worked from home for almost two years.  I really liked the flexibility, but I missed having human interaction during the day.  DH would come home and tell me about his co workers and the people he interacted with.  I worked for the government on several contracts.
