Gabrielle Giffords Interview

Did anyone watch the interview with Diane Sawyer last night?

She and her husband are such an inspiration.

I also thought it was very interesting with how they treat brain injuries, recovery, the psychology of it all, especially by using music to relearn things.

I intended on watching but I didn't. Heard it was good.

however, it makes me sad to think that people with less money and/or connections would not get such state of the art innovation in their treatment...

I had the same thought.  She's fortunate to have access to some of the best treatment possible.

This is true to some extent. Not everyone gets Dr. Nancy Helms-Estabrooks as their personal SLP. I'm a speech therapist--Dr. Estabrooks wrote 1/2 the textbooks I used in grad school!

  • I thought it was so moving - and Mark Kelly is a saint. What an amazing husband and supporter.

  • I really enjoyed watching it. I had a stroke so I have been through a lot of what she went through. My stroke damaged the other side of my brain so I lost more physical and emotional than language. She really has accomplished so much. Her husband is pretty amazing as well. My husband stuck by me as well and its amazing how many stories we heard of husbands bailing in these situations.

  • I didn't know it was going to be on and got lucky to turn it on right at the beginning.

It was truly inspirational, not just on her end but that of Mark Kelly. Those two are such fantastic role models for people in that same situation and even though not every can afford what they can, just the amount of positivity he had throughout the whole thing is HUGE when dealing with stuff like that.

My dad had a stroke back in 2003 and his attitude towards rehab was extremely negative and from the beginning he defeated himself. He could have been so much better than what he ended up being had he had a positive attitude toward everything instead of an I-can't-so-I-won't outlook

I'm very sorry about your stroke, but I'm glad to hear that your H as well as other spouses like Mark Kelly are wonderful and supportive.  It makes me sad to think that some would leave, especially when their wives need them the most.

I thought it was inspirational to hear about the things GG's H did to stay positive.  Like hanging up a sign that said "no crying allowed" and having the strength to take video clips for her.

The most emotional part for me to see/hear was when she couldn't fully express herself and just kept saying, "Boo hoo, boo hoo" to the therapist.  So sad... I can't even imagine.

This story is incredible, and I hope she continues to make progress.

  • The rehab facility I work at uses music if it was a hobby before or if they enjoyed music before.  Its pretty typical to utilize hobbies or previous enjoyments in therapies music, dancing, fishing, etc. It engages patients more.
