Volunteering Opportunities?

Hi all,

Lurker here with a question! does anyone know of any great volunteering opportunities in the twin cities?

I am really wanting to connect to an organization that needs some help and am looking for something that will have a big impact. I specifically was wanting to do something involving babies or children and mommies.

We live on the east side so not sure if there is something in St Paul.

If you know of anything let me know! thanks!

Re: Volunteering Opportunities?

  • Hi. It's not in St. Paul, but you could check in to People Serving People. It's a homeless shelter for families (lots of women and children) in Minneapolis.

    peopleservingpeople.org (sorry it's not clicky)

  • I'm not sure if they take volunteers (I can't imagine that they won't), but Going Home is a great organization that helps single immigrant mothers and their kids with school work, enrichment, job skills, and resumes.  Below is an article on the founder.

  • I've volunteered before at People Serving People.  It was a few years ago, so take this with a grain of salt.. but I feel like that's one of the 'cool' places to volunteer.  When we called to organize a group to go help, they actually had a wait list of sorts for volunteers.  This could be totally different by now, but I got the impression that they had enough volunteers.  Of course, volunteering anywhere is a great thing to do, but there are tons of other places that need help too.

I've used http://www.volunteermatch.org/ before, and it's an awesome website.  You can narrow down by 'field' and location, etc.

    Have fun! :)

They just opened a family room in Gilette Children's Hospital in St Paul!

  • There is an event coming up in January or February at MOA that is called Hands On Twin Cities (I think...)  But they have a bunch of volunteer organizations set up with booths so you can go check them out and meet some of the people.

There is the Merrick Community Services that has at least 2 locations on the East Side.... one connected to Harding HS and one off Payne Ave.

Also, there is a battered womens shelter in DT St. Paul called the Naomi Center.

  • Check with Fort Snelling...  Possibly the USO has some connections...  Or even the VA hospital...  There are a lot of military families that could use the extra help with even the little things...

Otherwise, your local church is a good place to start!  I know ours has a women's group that does the meals for families after funerals on a rotating basis, plus it's something that isn't a "once and done" type thing and they're always looking for help, especially from younger women!!!

  • Try looking at volunteer match. That way you can get an idea of what organizations need volunteers. I believe it also tells you if it is a one time volunteer opportunity or if it is ongoing.
