Gift Grrrrrr...

I was thinking about this over the weekend and wondered if anyone else had experienced this:

Last year, we gave two significant gift certificates to our parents (one for a B&B and one for an offshore fishing trip) as gifts. Neither one has been used. It's possible the fishing trip has/had an expiration date.

I'm just a little frustrated that these may go to waste/have not been used. I know I shouldn't care, because it was a gift and the recipient can do/not do whatever they want with it. Ultimately, I'm just curious if anyone else experiences this and if maybe it's just a bad gift idea. FWIW, they seemed excited at the time of receipt, it's not like we gave a fishing trip to someone who hated fishing...

Re: Gift Grrrrrr...

  • I know my parents won't use gift cards, even if it were to something they like.    So I know for them it is a bad gift idea because IMO it's a waste of money.

Most other people I give gift cards to, I'm pretty sure they use them.

  • I think it's interesting that the gc's weren't used. I would love to get a cool gift like that.

Is it possible that they wanted to use the gifts when it was warmer outside and then forgot about them?

  • I am bad about using GCs, especially if it's for services.  It always seems like an awesome gift when I get it, but I never get around to scheduling it.  I finally told DH to never get me a massge GC again, but instead to give me a "day" planned.  I would rather him say "On XYZ Saturday, I have arranged babysitting and you/we have an appointment for:____, so plan your day accordingly."

I would be annoyed if I knew someone didn't use my gift, as well - especially b/c that sounds like something that was probably a nice chunk of change.  But on the other hand, I see how it could end up going unused.  (this is someone who used a massage GC on the last day of the year expiration b/c I never got around to scheduling it)

  • when my dad died and we went through his stuff, i found several hundred dollars worth of ruth's chris GC's.  one of them was 9 years old...lol.

unless it's something this person has specifically asked for, i think you just have to be happy that you tried.

  • Both of those gifts require scheduling ahead of time and offshore fishing is only good a months out of the year and books up fast if it's a reputable charter.  Maybe they just haven't had the opportunity to use them yet?
