WDYT: Artificial Sugars. (Moms especially)
How do you feel about artificial sugars such as splenda and stevia?
Re: WDYT: Artificial Sugars. (Moms especially)
I don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners 99% of the time. The only time I consumed it was when I was putting sweet n low in my coffee, until the lady I work with said artificial sweeteners eat your brain.
There's also articles I've read that said artificial sugars make you crave carbs, so it actually has a reverse effect if you are trying to cut calories.
I was trying to get off the sweet n low addiction for sometime any way.... guess I needed a scare tactic to really motivate me.
I love splenda. I wouldn't give any to kids, but I did eat it while pregnant (after my OB said it was fine).
I though stevia was natural?
I think that it is. I should have titled it alternative sugars.
The reason I ask is because I had a neighbor who kind of flipped when I told them I was using splenda in my coffee instead of sugar.
Artificial sugars kind of freak me out.. even splenda. That being said, I have been using stevia. When I read Skinny Bittttch, they talked about a lot of the benefits of Stevia. The only thing is, it doesn't sweeten things up like splenda or regular sugar. I feel a little better using it though.
It is one of those things though that it either bothers you or it doesn't. I find it weird that your neighbor freaked out on you.. you should have said STFU. Ha.... kidding!
Yes Stevia is a natural alternative to sugar, it is a great for people who are concerned about the carcinogenic effect of artificial sugars but are limiting their carb intake. It is also expensive, last time I checked it was even more than Splenda.
Sweet & Low and Equal have gotten a bad rep for the whole cancer thing. Splenda is widely accepted as a no calorie alternative to sugar but I personally despise the taste. At work we have a cheesecake that is "low carb", made with Splenda instead of sugar and really popular even though the cheesecake itself is not at all low calorie. We also have an entire line of drinks that can be made "skinny style" which are low calorie. We make Splenda bases for them. Some have it mixed with lemon juice, some have it mixed with honey and water, and we go though a ton of the stuff. If I liked the taste I would think it's OK in small doses but I hate it. My OB practice says artificially sweetened drinks like Crystal Light are fine ways to get in water without the calories of juice, so if they think it's OK it must be
but instead I prefer the taste of a 10:90 juice to water ratio and I prefer my coffee black. I haven't met my pediatrition yet so I don't know his opinion on it for kids outside of the womb. I will try and stay away from it for my child but I don't think an occasional small amount will really hurt you any more than hormones and antibiotics in milk or chicken.
I really wanted to read that book, but I was told I would never want to eat again. Is it that bad?
Parts of it are pretty bad. I skipped most of those parts though. There are tons of interesting points brought up. I also recommend Food Rules by Michael Pollan... informative but doesn't use scare tactics like Skinny B or try to force to be be vegan.
1. I'm not sure how artificial sweeteners can be much worse than dumping a Big Mac down your gullet or tossing back a RedBull + vodka, so your neighbor can suck it.
2. I prefer real sugar, so that's what I use. Go big or go home, I say.
3. I may or may not be seriously addicted to sugar. See #2.
I stay away from artifical sweetners myself, including Splenda. I've nearly bought Stevia many times, but I guess I'm cheap, because I always decide not to.
For baking, I try to use natural sweetners (honey, agave & maple syrup) when I can. They are still full of calories, but I feel better about it than dumping loads of refined sugar into my baked goods. If a recipe calls for a small amount of sugar, I will typically use it then.
When it comes to my coffee, I am hopelessly addicted to awful flavored creamer. I know it is so bad, but it is my crack. I can't give it up even though I know it is full of junk and doesn't mesh with my healthy eating habits.

This is me, too.
But you'll join the cool people club if you were vegan. Just sayin'.
I buy Truvia (the Cocoa-Cola brand of Stevia) when I can...it's like $2.
I use Splenda when Stevia isn't available. I don't think I would let the girls have artificial sweetners like that; I probably won't succeed in avoiding all of it, but I will make the effort.
