And it sucks.
First, having to re-open every single account possible- phone, rental, even electric company and trash was not fun with all the extra "hard" inquiries.
But the fighting over bills, being told certain things had been taken care of (ex- house phone was in my name, which I did not remember), and had been previously set up with auto bill pay, and he just did not pay them or canceled the auto bill pay, and of course, the mail saying that it needed to be paid was sent to the house, where I did not live. And the e-mails were sent to his account, which is how we had everything set up, and I do not have access to. This is the part that's killing me. I have already sent in disputes, and hopefully this will help. We have all of this spelled out in the divorce decree, but of course, we just got this 2 weeks ago, so I don't know how much it will help me.
It just feels like another lead weight around my neck. I make a good salary, live in the cheapest rental I could find, don't go out at all, but it still feels like I'm hardly making it. Argh, I'm just having a bad day.
Re: Getting divorced has hurt my credit
I know - it totally sucks! Believe me, I can sympathize.
Yep! I had great credit before my divorce. Now it is in the crapper.
I had a kid, took over the house payment on my own, all the bills, and added childcare expenses... and did not get child support. Thank GOD I had a decent savings or I would have lost my condo and had to file bankruptcy.
The good news is it helped me get my butt in gear and after a lot of hard work I am climbing out of my hole. My medical bills and Legal fees will be paid off with my tax refund and my CC debt will be gone by the spring.
The last couple months before my divorce was final were the hardest. I thought I was going to lose it. Everything worked out. Take things one day at a time. Don't give up.
I can totally relate to everyone. My credit has completely went down the dump since my separation/divorce. Even though we didn't assume any of each others debt, but since we didn't split any of the personal property in the house, I basically had to start over and purchase all new everything, while also paying one half of the mortgage, my own rent, car payment and bills. I am hoping that during tax season I can settle some of the cc debts and begin to restore my credit.
Hang in there it'll get better.
