What to do with a 6-year old wedding dress?

Not mine, which I am keeping for sentimental reasons (it's SO pretty!). But I was a two-dress bride because I couldn't decide which one of the two gorgeous ones I bought at the Running of the Brides in August 2005 I wanted to wear.

The other dress is sitting in my old bedroom at my parents' house and they want to get rid of it. I don't know what is fashionable with wedding dresses right now, so I don't now if it's completely outdated or not.

My mom asked a consignment store and they said it was too old :-(

Any suggestions!

Re: What to do with a 6-year old wedding dress?

  • Are you planning on having any more children?  Some of my friends had their dresses made into chrisening gowns.  There is also the Brides for Cancer (or something like that).  You could also donate to Goodwill, etc.

Depending on what it looks like, you may be able to have it made into a summer type dress.

  • If you can't consign it then ditto Brides Against Cancer (http://bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/)

Other options are doing the trash the dress photo shoot (assuming you - unlike me - can still fit into it).

If you're in any way crafty (again - unlike me) you could make it into throw pillows for the bed, use some of the detailing to make necklaces/headbands/etc.

  • You could donate it or sell it.

I plan on making my dress into a christmas tree skirt eventually (not quite ready to pull the trigger yet!)

  • I sold mine on eBay 3 weeks after my wedding and got a decent price for it. You can search completed listings on eBay (go to advanced search) to see if any of that brand or style have sold so you can see how much they sold for.

  • I'd donate it. You didn't wear it, so it's not like it has any sentimental meaning to you.

  • This might be the Vicodin talking, but is it something you could use for quilting?  No doubt the fabric is high quality, and could be used for binding, embellishments or something else?

    It's probably the Vicodin talking.

Ha... I was kind of thinking the same thing. And I'm not on vicodin!
