BWLO: ear tubes?

For the life of me I can't remember- are there any mommas on here whose LOs have had tubes put in their ears?  I just got home from the dr with Mads... She has her 4th ear infection in 6 months (3 of them being in the past 2 months) all in the same ear. Her pedi is referring us to an ENT specialist to discuss the possibility of having tubes put in.  Just wondering if anyone has any experience or advice for us.  Thanks in advance!

Re: BWLO: ear tubes?

  • Elle got them at 7 months, she had continual infections that wouldn't clear and was bursting her ear drums. The specialist recommended them because of language development after testing her and watching her through another infection. The surgery itself was very quick, almost 5 minutes. And she was herself within 30 minutes, and since then she has had 1 infection easily treated with drops. I was reluctant but speech developments were key to me

  • Thanks Amy :)  I have no idea as to what to think just yet.... on one hand I'm nervous/reluctant, but on the other hand she's been on antibiotics more than she hasn't in the last 2 months & has clearly been in awful pain each time.  Today's visit required both myself & a nurse to get her to hold still while the dr looked in her ear.... it breaks my heart to see her hurting like this.  I'm really curious to see what the specialist will have to say.
  • I was reluctant too. But like you said the being on antibiotics was an issue, especially continually orally taking them. Now we treat her with ear drops for 2 days and done. We go for a hearing test next month I think to see if there has been any damage.

  • My daughter (now 14 months) had them put in at 10 months, after fluid from an infection never drained. We had a similar experience to Amy - a very simple procedure that was quick. She has had multiple colds since then, and the amount of fluid draining from her ears has convinced me that it had to be incredibly painful to have it stuck in there. We also went ahead because of concerns about language development; in our case, she wasn't hearing well because of the fluid and was at a critical age. We also haven't needed oral antibiotics since then, and that was another large concern of mine.
  • Landon has his 4th infection since August. We've done amox, augmentin, and omnicef orally. Now, he's getting a series of 3 injections (yesterday, today, tomorrow) of rocefin (sp?) which will take 3 weeks to reach their full effect. Then, he's getting tubes. I can't wait fo him to get tubes... I just want him to be better!
  • Amy & Trout- thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me.  I'm so glad to know that the tubes have helped your LOs!!  We have an appt with the specialist on Dec 8th, the earliest I could get, so we'll see what he says!

Janks- so sorry to hear that Landon has to deal with injections :(  Hope that they take effect quickly for him (and you guys!) and that he's better soon!!!  We're kind of in the same boat in that we've already done amox, omnicef & just started augmentin today.... hopefully it doesn't come to injections for us too.  I hear you though on just wanting them to be better.... there's nothing worse than just waiting & watching your LO in pain :(

  • LO got them when he was 2.5. His mother took him to a speech pathologist who dx hearing loss after about 4 months. We ended up taking him to a doctor who recommended the tubes and having his adenoids and tonsils removed. The doctor said it was likely from recurrent ear infections from when he was younger that were never cleared up ( the medicane was mysteriously lost).

Anyway the procedeure was quick and LO woke up immedialty asking for the dog. His recovery was rather quick and he didn't exhibit much. He honeslty didn't seem to be in that much discomfort but I wonder if I was projecting my experience onto him. Of course LO was older than Mads but he didn't really complain and he only seemed not himself for about a day and a half before he was up running around.

The results after were AMAZING. Within weeks LO was speaking better- a result of him actually hearing. The doctor has said that he regained back most of his hearing and his prognoisis is good. He no longer tugs his ear or winces when you get near it.

At this point, the tubes have fallen out but it worked for LO and I am grateful that there wasn't more permanent damage.
