Maintaining Clean Shower / Tub

DH and I recently scrubbed our shower / tub clean.  So nice to have a clean shower!  But what a lot of work.  Any tips for keeping it clean now that it's looking good?  Are any products we can use, or simple daily things we can do to prevent soap scum from accumulating to begin with?  TIA!

Re: Maintaining Clean Shower / Tub

  • I really like scrubbing bubbles shower cleaner.  I love the smell of it too.  I keep a scrubber under the sink specifically for the shower too.  It helps with around the drain and under the shelves we have in there.

  • Once a week I spray it with Scrubbing Bubbles, then scrub it out lightly with a sponge, it takes about five minutes.  I rarely ever have to deep clean because of this.  I have Tilex daily spray but I hardly ever remember to use it!
  • I use Method Daily Shower spray almost every day, and it works great!  About once every three weeks, I will use a Magic Eraser on the tub itself.  For deep cleaning, I use something like Soft n' Scrub for the tiles.  I also wash my liner about every 2-3 weeks, because it tends to get mildew on it.  I wash it in bleach.
  • The best things I've found are magic erasers and dish soap.  I much prefer the magic eraser because they are soooo easy and just take it right off.  The scrubbing bubbles are a little harsh for me, and never really seemed to work well when I tried them.

  • I make my own shower spray with vinegar, dish soap, jet dry tea tree oil and water.  I did an experiment and I lasted 4 weeks before I broke dowm to clean my shower. It was still clean, I just couldn't live with the fact that I went a month without cleaning the shower.

Also switch to shower gel.  Bar soap contains talc and that is the main problem with soap scum.

  • Simple - here you go.  We use a towel on the floor by the shower rather than a rug.  When we get out, we take the hand-held shower thing and rinse the shower curtain, walls, shelves and floor of the shower.  Then take the floor towel and dry shelves, walls and fixture, and floor.  60 seconds total.

It stays clean, and really, I cannot tell you the last time I "cleaned" the shower.

This is exactly what I do...doesn't take long, keeps it clean etc

  • I use Scrubbing Bubbles once a week and I use a daily cleaning spray every day as well. It helps a lot, I think.

  • Thank you all so much!  I'm going to try these tips.  So excited about the prospect of keeping the shower clean!

  • Tilex daily shower spray. Just spray it down when you're finished showering and it's that easy! If you're forgetful like me, you can buy the Scrubbing Bubbles automatic system. It is a little more costly, but you get the added convenience of not having to do it yourself! LOL

Also, I use regular Plege on my shower walls. The water just beads up and rolls right off of it, and soap scum doesn't stick. Do not, I repeat DO NOT spray the floor! LOL. I learned from experience on that one.

And if you would like to do an easy deep cleaning just to keep you satisfied, since it will be a cinch now that you're maintaining a gorgeous shower, I would recommend using a strong cleaner such as Soft n' Scrub or Kaboom and a sponge or tub brush to give your tub the once over that will give you peace of mind. HTH!

  • Best advice I got was to dry the shower when your finished. I keep a facecloth by the shower and wipe the shower dry when I'm done (takes a min or so), then every 2 days I replace the facecloth. It's easy to wash since its small and keeps the shower clean

  • I mix half bleach and half water in a spray bottle.  I just spray the walls with that and it kills the mildew within minutes it is gone.
