Fave winter/autumn cocktails/drinks

So I am trying out recipes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I just tried one from the Southern Living holiday cookbook. Milk punch- milk, cream, bourbon, sugar, cinnamon. It was pretty good! I also love the hot chocolate which I make with expresso or coffee,  whiskey, hot chocolate and chili powder (especially for really cold days!)

Do you have a favorite holiday drink? Extra brownie points to those who post the recipes :)

  • Some favorites (not necessarily in one sitting ;)):

    Hot cocoa with peppermint snaps

Warm apple cider with spiced rum (and a dollop of whipped cream)

Mulled wine/ gluew wine (likely I mispelled the tar out of that, sorry)

  • I've been meaning to post this recipe.  People always say "eeeeew" when I tell them about it but I implore you: try it.  It's so awesome.

    Malibu
    Milk
    Sprinkle of nutmeg on top

I like it 50/50 but you can do whatever mix is right for your booze tolerance.  Serve in a martini glass.

Trust me, it is so good!  And, surprisingly for a coconut liquor, so Christmassy.

  • I love vin chaud/gl?hwein...I make it every Xmas and bottle it. It makes a great gift (I usually make about 10 bottles) here since people here aren't all that familiar with it. I found a recipe online a few years ago and tweaked it slightly....I'm on my phone as usual so I can't dig it up right now but if I get on my computer later I can look for it if you are interested. That amaretto cranberry sounds yummy, I'll have to give that a try!

I've love to see this! We make mulled wine constantly in the wintertime but we just buy the packs (and some cheap red wine). I'm sure we could do better!

yes please! I love vin chaud!

  • Here is the recipe for the Gl?hwein:

    Ingredients:

?         4 quarts of red wine (zin, burgundy, merlot etc.)

    ?         1 pint brandy

?         1 cup sugar (I usually start out with less and add to taste later)

    ?         6 cinnamon sticks

    ?         12 whole cloves

    ?         1/8 tsp allspice

    ?         1/8 tsp mace

    ?         2 oranges , sliced

    ?         1 lemon,  sliced

    ?         1 bay leaf

    Directions:

    1.       Pour  the wine into a large pot and begin heating over low heat

    2.       As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is dissolved

    3.       Add the brandy

    4.       Heat thoroughly, but do not allow to boil!

    5.       Add the lemon and the orange

    6.       Steep for about an hour over low heat

    7.       You may add more sugar during this time if desired, stirring it well so it dissolves

    8.       Serve hot and garnish with orange slices. A stick of cinnamon could also be used.

I usually strain it through cheesecloth to get all the sediment and cloves out since I bottle the majority of it. This serves about 12-15 according to the recipe.

    Enjoy Smile
