i think i made a mistake

So i am a graphic designer that just graduated this last may. I was extremely lucky and got a job just a few weeks before graduation...a very good job on salary with great work to round out my portfolio.

with that said, I still do some "bottom of the barrel" work i really dont mind doing, and usually jump at the chance so my employer can see i am hard working and enthusiastic. So this evening my boss needed me to bring a box full of products we had of a clients that he forgot. He was meeting the client over drinks near a place i lived--so he called and asked me to bring it on my way home from work around 5:30. So i get there, and get introduced and all is fine...and then they offer me a beer. I politely declined and said no thank you i really need to get home and get some dinner.

I told my DH and he thinks i should have stayed to develop a business relationship...and now im kicking myself for completely being naive and not seizing an opportunity. I personally felt out of place with it being two much older men who seemed like they had an already developed friendship...basically i felt like i would be imposing. But my DH thinks i should really try to open myself up to opportunities like this.

I am not sure i would ever get another one like this...but in the future i guess i should loosen up and stay? Now i just feel completely stupid and idiotic. Should i be feeling this way?

  • Try not to beat yourself up over every little thing.

Sometimes people have other plans and can't stay, and sometimes they're good to stay. Maybe you'll get another opportunity and you can stay for a beer (or a non-alcoholic drink if you're driving).

I don't think this is going to be a make-or-break for your career.

  • I can promise you that they stopped thinking about it the second you left the restaurant, though you're still dwelling. It's no big deal, I promise :) In the future, though, you'll be better prepared to take advantage of spontaneous opportunities for networking. Just consider it a learning experience.

  • Also, they could've offered the drink out of politeness, not a genuine interest in having you stay (just trying to give you a way to feel better).
