Must sees in San Francisco?

DH, the kids and I will be visiting SIL in San Francisco this Christmastime, and I've never been there.  I'd love some ideas on things to see, including touristy/non-touristy stuff within the city. Although DH and I will probably get to go out on our own once or twice, for the most part we'll have our 4 and 5 year old with us, so bonus points if it's kid friendly.

Re: Must sees in San Francisco?

  • I have no idea about kid friendly, it was DH and I's first trip together so there was mostly drinking and making out.

John Foley's is family friendly  in the daytime, it's a pub/restaurant with awesome food. We have been trying to repliceate their guiness beef barley soup since we went there in 2005.

There are the wax museum, ripleys and ghirardelli factory that might be interesting for kids and adults.

Golden Gate Park is beautiful and huge and would be good for kids.

For an adult night go to North Beach if you're into Kerouac or Ginsberg (or any body of the beat generation). It's there big place in history, especially the bar Vesuvio.  We also went to tons of irish pubs off the beaten track and had the best time ever. We actually made friends with a couple from England at one that we still keep in touch with and have had visit us in Houston.

  • cable car rides. fun for all

ferry to sausalito for the day (I have done this in january and it was still a good day venture) chilly but fun.

    union square tree for christmas

the palace of fine arts has been under construction for a while, so you can't go and roam it like you used to, but you can walk around the water side and it's a fantastic view.  and the exploratorium is there, it's a fun little place to play.

chinatown is my favorite place to wander, and the kids can pick up the greatest kitchy toys and trinkets. (crickets in the cage are my favorites!)

walk the golden gate.  or bike it.

the view from the presidio beaches of the golden gate are some of my favorites.

have fun. I love that city and had lots of fun living there.  I miss the dim sum more than I can say....sigh.

  • Go to the Ferry Building/Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning if you can.  So much fun and such great food!  Also, get a gingerbread cupcake at Miette (in the ferry building).  Delicious.

  • SFMOMA is awesome... Nice date opportunity

Alcatraz evening tour is great... And kid friendly

Rent an electric car and goof around in it... You can see lots of city sights this way, Coit Tower, The Pier/Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square (go get a sundae with fresh chocolate), drive down Lombard street, etc.

Pack a picnic and enjoy one of the many parks

  • Make sure to check the weather.  It rained the whole time we were there, but we trudged on and still did all of our stops - so just be prepared.  You may want to bring a couple of cheap ponchos if you think it will rain b/c otherwise, the touristy places sell them for crazy prices (for literally a plastic trash bag).

Loved Muir Woods - they have paved paths (good for kids) and the redwoods are amazing.

Agree with The Ferry Buidling.  There were tons of vendors outside in front of it (perfect for some Xmas shopping if you can put them back in your suitcase) and a farmers market behind.  We ate at Gott's (fancy burger place) inside the building - SUPER good food!

If you or your DH like history - go to Alcatrez.  The kids would probably like this, too (although, it takes awhile to wait for the ferry and the ferry ride - so depends on how patient they are).  Once you get on the island, you can do a guided tour, or just walk around on your own.  With the kids - you might not be able to follow the tour so well, but it's neat to see the cells and visit all of the rooms and hear about the attempted (and successful!) breakout stories.

Ghiradelli Square was pretty neat - especially at night, and I am sure it would be even more decorated for Xmas.

If you and DH decide to go off by yourself, you may want to try Sonoma.  It's not too far away, and you can limit your visits to just a few places and get back at a reasonable time.  I recommend Domaine Carneros for Sparkling Wine (aka: champagne).  We loved this place b/c there was a place to sit down and you could order cheese plates to go with the samples (which were yummy!).  We ended up also ordering another large glass of one of the sparkling wines, and just sat and talked (and laughed....and drank....).  We ended up not even going to our third place b/c we were having so much fun there.

Another tip for wine country is to know the hours of the places you are going.  I think we went on an off day (Sunday?), so we were a little surprised when some places were shutting down at 5pm,since we had gotten a late start.  (Another reason we didn't get to the next place...)

Have fun!  I am sure SIL will have some great suggestions, as well.  Of course, you *have* to ride the Trolleys, too!  The kids would like that.  Some of them don't allow drinks, though, so be careful not to just come from the coffee shop and hop on - they will grumble at you. ;-)
