Thanksgiving confession

We're going to have Thanksgiving dinner with friends.  They invited us over, and I think just one other couple.  She asked me to let her know what I'd like to make, but before I got back to her, she sent me a message to say that the other couple really wanted to make ribs.  So she and her husband decided to forget the turkey and try smoking a brisket.  And now we're having a full-on BBQ themed Thanksgiving dinner.

And I'm really, really bummed.  Sad  I may need to make a mini Thanksgiving feast for just DH and me the next day (with turkey and mashed potatoes and fried sweet potatoes and rolls).

Re: Thanksgiving confession

  • No turkey?? How is it Thanksgiving, then?? I'd be bummed out, too. :(

Our first year hosting Thanksgiving, we found out that they sell whole turkey breasts, without the rest of the turkey, if you want to make a couple-sized Thanksgiving feast. :)

  • can you make a small chicken? my family used to do chicken for thanksgiving because we don't really celebrate, and i always insisted as a kid, so there weren't enough people to eat a full turkey.... i always made a small chicken. then you can also make mashed potatoes, stuffing, and a few other small things. with a small guestlist, i'm sure you can handle making all of those in one day?

  • honestly?  I'd stay home and make a Thanksgiving dinner, even if it was just the two of us.  I know maybe that sounds mean, but I'd tell them we decided we really wanted to have a more traditional dinner.  Maybe I'm all talk and no action, but a BBQ thanksgiving wouldn't fly for me.

ETA: I know that Thanksgiving is about being with people and not about the food, but it would really bug me that they changed it without asking.  Maybe I'm just in a snarky mood today ;)

PS even when we go to my ILs for Thanksgiving, my MIL makes a full American and a full Korean meal, lol  I don't see why you can't have both!

    wtf! Wink

I think having a second TDay for you and H sounds like a good idea. Mmmmm left over turkey sammiches.

  • We're in kind of a similar situation. My family is throwing my grandparents a (I think) 65th anniversary party since their anniversary falls on Thanksgiving this year, and just combining it with Thanksgiving. My uncle owns three restaurants, and loves to do things differently, so he took a poll and asked if people would want pig (like a whole, suckling pig roasted in the barbecue) instead of turkey. My grandpa loves pig, so of course he said yes, and then my DH said yes, too. I said it was fine with me, but I didn't think so many people would agree! So - we're having suckling pig for Thanksgiving. Not sure what the sides are going to be yet, but I'm assuming they're going to be relatively traditional for Thanksgiving.

So DH and I are getting a turkey and doing our own Thanksgiving on the Friday after. But we're doing it the easy way (except the turkey). We're getting Stove Top, canned yams, I'll be making mashed potatoes from scratch though, and making a Brussels sprouts au gratin. We want traditional food, and we're going to get it! LOL

    a 3lb chicken is easier to eat for a family of 3 (mom and 2 kids, since my dad doesn't eat poultry), than a 10lb turkey. i don't think i've ever seen a 10lb turkey...smallest probably 16?

  • It's not really Thankgiving without the turkey! I would feel bad cancelling on friends but I don't think I would be happy at a BBQ thanksgiving.
  • It would be so weird to have BBQ or suckling pig for Thanksgiving dinner! My birthday falls on Thanksgiving this year and I told my mom I'm fine with sticking a candle in pumpkin pie, because it's Thanksgiving and pumpkin pie is what is meant to be eaten for dessert on Thanksgiving. I can't imagine having anything except turkey and the trimmings. I'd definitely have a mini-Thanksgiving with H another day that week. Heck, we might have our own mini Thanksgiving just so we can have our own leftovers.

That said, I don't think I'd turn down a dinner with friends based on what's on the menu. I'd just use it as an excuse to spread Thanksgiving over multiple days :)

I hate to say it, but this.

To me - the turkey and all the traditional foods ARE part of the holiday, and without them I wouldn't feel the holiday was complete.  Yeah, I just said that.  I guess holiday foods complete me.  Embarrassed

I agree completely. Thanksgiving=turkey. You can have a BBQ any other day of the year. I would say most people only bust out the whole turkey on Thanksgiving day.

Hahaha. Samzies. I actually don't even love turkey as much as all the delicious sides but walking into a house that smelled like BBQ instead of turkey just ain't right. It ain't right!

Ha!  I do agree with you ladies.  I don't mind missing the turkey so much as the sides.  We'll still go, mainly because I enjoy hanging out with these friends...but I'm pretty sure I'll be making a separate meal for DH and me on Friday.  Or maybe I'll just go crash Picks' meal!  Smile
