Carpool Thursday

Well, since the radio station I pull these from is local, they are still talking about Penn State. So you can answer option A or option B (or both).

Option A: Regardless of the scandal, do you think Joe Paterno is worthy of the $500,000 pension he is slated to get or do you think the scandal should be over before he could be able collect his pension?

Option B: What do you think of Milwaukee's add campaign against co-sleeping where it shows a billboard of a baby in bed with a knife that says "Your baby sleeping next to you could be just as dangerous?"

I think because he is dismissed with cause, if it said he isn't entitled if dismissed with cause, he should be ineligible.

However, if it is based on years of service and there is no mention of dismissal for cause, he should get it now.

I think that it is using hyperbole- but many ads do that.

The risk of SIDS is real and in some communities people ignore it.  I think if they are having enough issues to do an ad campaign, maybe some of the community is missing the point through pre-natal care and early interventions.

I will say, I think there's a genetic component of predisposition towards SIDS, and that some babies are more susceptible than others.  As a baby I had sleep apnea and my husband had an older brother who died of SIDS, so we'll never sleep with a baby in our bed/ with covers/ with stuffed animals/ with bumpers.  For other families, it works out okay.

    Just my 2 cents.

If you're dismissed/fired from a job, you lose all rights to a pension. Right? If not, you should.

In related news, did you hear that Paterno sold his house to his wife for $1 in July. That totally screams "knew it was coming" if you ask me. He's trying to get rid of assets, before he finds himself in civil court. He probably doesn't want the pension now anyway.

Option B: What do you think of Milwaukee's add campaign against co-sleeping where it shows a billboard of a baby in bed with a knife that says "Your baby sleeping next to you could be just as dangerous?"

I don't think it's too much. SIDS is a serious thing and people need to get serious about it. I've seen other ads from this campaign with bruised/beaten babies, and as disturbing as they are, they're getting the point across.

I had a cousin die of SIDS less than 2 years ago. It was awful. I will say that now that Charlotte is bigger I will let her sleep next to me in bed- my choice. If Mark is out of town, probably 50% of the time I just let her stay in bed with me. I am able to check on her when I wake and tend to her better that way. She goes into her own bed with breathable bumpers and a sleep sack when he is home or when its not storming or some other situation. I understand the need to make people aware, however, I think the knife comparison is a little harsh.

A child who is genetically presidposed to SIDS will be affected by it either in a crib or co-sleeping.  Just because a mother chooses to sleep in the same bed with her child in no way insinuates that she isn't "serious" about SIDS.  And honestly, co-sleeping is a cultural norm in many other countries...

I don't look at it as co-sleeping = your baby will die of SIDS. I know babies in cribs die of SIDS, too. Research shows that co-sleeping, bumpers, certain sleep positions, etc increase the risk. I don't understand why people would ignore those warnings.

  • I am all for the ads. Yes, they are over the top but something needs to change here. It is not like they are doing it just to do it, there are TONS of co-sleeping deaths here. There actually was another one within the last 2 weeks. The summer Weston was born, the was pretty much one on a weekly basis for a while. I could barely watch the news.

I didn't co-sleep with Weston, nor will I with future children, but I know there are safer ways to go about it.  I don't think alot of these were basic SIDs, the child was genetically destined for this death circumstances. It has been happening way too often. Without me sounding judgmental, most of the cases are in the inner city where education and daily living is not the greatest.. I do feel like some of the deaths could have been avoided with more education on the subject and with what the ads will provide, a shock into reality.

Agreed. If his pension was just based on year of service then he should still be entitled to that.  Not EVERYTHING he did was horrible, he was a good football coach and for most of his career he did that job well.  I don't like the idea of him walking away with money after all this, but it is what it is.  He'll probably lose it all in court stuff anyway.

  • Okay, I'm here, fresh from my root canal and ready to weigh in.

I co-sleep with Ellie. I always have. You all know that. I've not been shy about sharing that fact.

When you have a baby, you find what works for you. Ellie did not sleep well alone. She did not sleep well in the PnP next to our bed. She only slept well when she was snuggled up next to mommy or daddy. We did what worked for us so that we could all get a good night's rest.

There are ways to co-sleep that ARE safe for everyone. Putting your mattress on the floor so that your child is not at risk of falling. Taking all blankets and pillows off the bed. Swaddling. Pulling the bed away from the wall so there is no risk of the baby getting stuck between the wall and the mattress. Et cetera. It is a matter of educating yourself - just like every other parenting practice.

Family beds/co-sleeping is a very common practice in many cultures. Yes, SIDS is a very real thing and it's something to be serious about, but there are just as many risks involved with cribs as their are with co-sleeping. There is a reason why before the term SIDS was coined, these incidents were referred to as "crib death".

So, what do I think about these ad campaigns? I think fear mongering parents into not exploring every possibility is not the right solution.

I've said it before, I'll say it again - if there's one thing I've learned about parenting, it is that you absolutely have to do what works for you and your baby. If you all want to judge me for that? Go right ahead. I know in my heart that I've done right by my child.

  • I have no issue with parents who choose to co-sleep, if it works for them then great, as long as they do it in a safe way (like Ames mentioned). The area that these signs are in has a high infant death rate and if these signs make just 1 parent think about how they are co-sleeping and maybe making a small change to do it in a safer way, then I'm all for it.
