My sister's bachelorette party should be around March 2012 (Wedding: April 15). Ironically, it is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and the theme is Titanic-era dresses (total coincidence), steampunk for the guys, hot air balloon take-off, tea party reception, and a church full of her actor and artist friends all in costume (from newsboy to Gothic Lolita - you name it. Uber-hipster).
She is a funny combination of innocent and daring. The only girl I know who could have earned a white wedding dress (but chose blush, ha) and yet she was one of the nude models for the anatomy painting classes at her college. She isn't a teetotaler (she'll have wine or an alcoholic beverage) but she is not a clubber - no shots, bar dancing, etc...She is a certified hot air balloon "pilot" and a paid employee of the Renaissance Faire. She is a yoga instructor and passionate about tea. She could whip you up an authentic mat? or show you how to properly host a Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival tea party.
I'm thinking artsy, vintage, hipster. Something like a pin-up photo shoot, group calligraphy lessons, boat ride, swing dancing unique museum exhibit, funky asian-fusion style restaurant.....I don't know...what does Philly have to offer?
I'm looking for lodging, restaurants, events...everything. Got a friend you want to plug? We're all about keeping it local, friendly and small business!!
I'm from 3 hours away and only know the area as a tourist. Why did I choose Philly? I guess it's the "hippest" city within driving distance. You're welcome. ![]()
Re: Hipster, Steampunk, Vintage Ladies: Bachelorette Party Ideas??
As resident hipster on this board I'm confused by calligraphy lessons.
Some ideas:
Roller derby: http://www.phillyrollerderby.com/
Burlesque: http://www.peekaboorevue.com/
Burlesque classes: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Philadelphia-School-of-Burlesque/248019104866
I can also name a million bars to go to.
Thanks, lachute. These are great ideas!! If you feel like purging a list of bars, I'd be interested. Some place where the clientele remain clothed, there is a chance of trying a unique drink, and we can hear each other over the din.
Thanks
OHOH! A pinup photo shoot would be so much fun and I know the girl who did my pinup photos does group sessions!

If you are seriously interested in something like this, I would contact Celeste ASAP because I know she is crazy busy (because she's awesome) and she may already be booked up. The pinup shoot was super fun and Celeste is such a sweetheart. Her team was awesome and I had such a fun day that day (in addition to getting engaged). I highly recommend this and it's a great way to remember the occasion.
ETA: If you go the pinup shoot route, just know that it will be a full day event. I think when I was there for mine, I was there for at least 4 or maybe even 6 hours by the time you get your hair & makeup done and switch those looks for 2 outfits.
Bars - 700 Club, Tattooed Moms and Bob and Barbara's come to mind.
I think Philly Swing Dance Society is the group that does performances in Rittenhouse Sq.
Mutter Museum is the quirkiest museum that comes to mind, think gross-out medical abnormalities type stuff.
Funky asian fusion... why can't I think of anything good here...
Tatooed moms
Sugar moms
Silk city
All come to mind
Also I think el vez could be fun or north bowl (fun bowling alley in northern libs)
Tattooed Mom's is still open??? Best news ever! I thought they'd shut down.
Thanks so much for the ideas. I love them!
Ahh the Mutter Museum. Nothing like a soap lady to make us feel better about our bodies.
National Mechanics in Old City is a pretty funky one too...
it does have a steam punk vibe in decorations.
L'Etage is fun for dinner (french, crepes). There's a bar/club upstairs above the restaurant but it might have too many fratboys for your liking. For dancing/drinking I recommend Silk City. I haven't been there in 2 years but it's an old fav.
NorthBowl would be a good activity at night
What about KraftWork (http://kraftworkbar.com/)? It has a lot of great beers and it's full of hipsters. That could be fun after Northbowl.
I know some people who are into the whole steampunk thing and they've told me about Dorian's Parlor - they do events in Philadelphia. You may want to check to see if one of their parties coincides with the bach party and that could be a fun costumed/themed affair.
Funky Asian fusion - Chifa - Peruvian Chinese
And it's not Asian fusion, just Asian, but Vietnam Palace is a great and inexpensive place to get some delicious food and your buzz on with lychee and green tea martinis.
It's not very punk rock but if you have interests in karaoke, sushi and cocktails Yakatori Boy can be fun - I like it because their mics are wireless so you can work the bar while you sing, or they have private rooms.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
