From MM - Black Friday Backlash
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/black-friday-backlash-early-openings-112000843.html
I can see both sides.
1.) I don't understand why stores can't just have their sales during normal business hours. But then again, thats the whole part of black friday. Opening early, closing late.
2.) However, you should know that getting a retail job means having to work during Thanksgiving or Black Friday (most of the time) So many people who don't have a job right now would not even bat an eye at working during a holiday. And of course there are those who have no choice but to work every single holiday: Police, nurses, etc.
Re: From MM - Black Friday Backlash
I worked at 3am on Black Friday setting up for sales at Target as a 16 yr old. I don't care what time it is, it is inconvenient and it is part of your job as a retail associate. People who complain about these things are whiners who complain just to hear themselves speak.
Stand up for something you believe in.
I completely agree that when you get a job in retail, you're signing up for this. That being said, I think things are completely out of control. Places are open on Thanksgiving now! Is nothing sacred anymore? It's bad enough that people were opening earlier and ealier, even at midnight. But now you're encroaching on actual Thankgsiving? Everyone is just trying to one-up each other, open before everyone else. It's ridiculous.
What about all of the high school kids who work retail? You think their parents are going to be ok with them missing Thanksgiving to work? Hells no. My mom would have told me to quit.
When I was working retail, we always thought Black Friday was called so because of how dismal it was for those who work and have to deal with the customers that day...
Black Friday never really appealed to me as a consumer. Honestly, it's really a ploy to get people out of bed at ungodly hours to spend stupid amounts of money on things they could get just as cheap, if not cheaper, on Amazon. Or maybe this is just me being bitter because I have to work this Black Friday.... *grumble*

I have no sympathy at all for these people. When you work in a customer service oriented field, you have to accept that you have to work when the customer will be there. That usually means evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. If it's that much of a concern, don't agree to work one of those jobs. If I wanted every holiday off, I wouldn't be an ER nurse. And if I wanted my family together every holiday, I wouldn't have married a firefighter. It's part of what we signed up for, and we both know that.
Secondly, "Thanksgiving" is just a day on the calendar. DH and I have the "law of one day displacement", which means if one of us has to work on a holiday, anniversary, birthday, etc., we just move it. We coordinate with our families and say "Hey we both have to work Christmas, but we're free the day after" or whatever. Holidays are the days you get to spend with the people you love, regardless of what the calendar says.
Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
I have always been a Black Friday hater, but...
When I worked at Cracker Barrel, I had to work Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve every year. You didn't dare ask off. My sister is in retail now. She works the day after Thanksgiving and every weekend in December. There are pluses and minuses to any job. People need to just deal with it.
The fact that it's getting earlier and earlier every year is ridiculous. There's no reason people need to start shopping before 6am.
good point!
I do think there is a diference between doctors, nurses, firefighters, etc and people working retail. Hospitals NEED to be open and doctors NEED to be available on Thanskgiving, Christmas, etc. Target does not NEED to be open. I dont' exactly have sympathy for these people, but big picture, I think the retail world has gotten a little ridic regarding these shopping days.
I completely agree with this. change.org should save its breath for people who need their help, not people who opt in by working in certain industries.

Ditto this. I don't think my family has ever actually celebrated a holiday on its calendar date. We always celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday or Saturday, and we usually do Christmas early. When I was working retail, I wasn't allowed to take off on a day when my store really needed me just so that I could be at home for an arbitrary day.
My family's lax attitude has actually made dealing with holidays for both family's way easy. D's family throws a fit about spending actual days with him, so my family just shrugs and says, "Okay, we'll see you before or after that. Whatever works for you guys!"
This. I refuse to buy anything Christmas before Thanksgiving. I hate that Christmas is getting pushed down our throats starting in August.
I agree that it is an individual's choice to work in retail and they have to know what they are signing up for. However, why any store HAS to be open on a holiday or any earlier than normal business hours is beyond me. Other than health and safety related workers, there is no reason for any store to be open. Unfortunately, the people who get to decide when these stores will open and close are not the ones working... They're home with their families.
