Today, I made phone calls to all of my aunts to let them know DH and I are expecting #2. Most of my aunts reacted great and perfectly normal... but I also have two aunts who are social idiots and behave oddly most of the time anyway, and this is what I got:
Aunt #1's response: "Aw, that's nice. You know, when I was pregnant (75 million things happened all of which she attempted to describe in detail because they've never been more important/ in worse conditions/ incredibly glorious and remarkable than anyone else's experience EVER.)" Me: "Yeah, we're really excited..." Her: "You can't even imagine how excited I was when I got pregnant with TWINS!" Ok lady, you win!
Aunt #2's response: "Oh, congratulations. Did you hear that my daughter has gestational diabetes? Yeah, she will probably have to have a c-section now. The recovery will be awful. They'll probably have to schedule it while we're on our trip, so I'll probably miss my grandchild's delivery. The baby's father still wants nothing to do with the baby. Oh and did you hear that my mom is dying? Yeah, 4-6 months. We're praying for a miracle." Dear God!
In my immediate family, we call these two Penelope and Debbie Downer... both SNL references. What a pair they are.
Re: Everyone has a couple of whackadoos in their family, right?
My mom's ENTIRE side of the family is like this. As well as my STBX husband's ENTIRE family. Negative, negative, negative. All the time. Always focused on the bad, and always "woe is me". When Steve and I got engaged, we went to his parents house to celebrate and show them my ring. His mom asked to see my ring, looked at it for about 3 seconds, and then ran back to get her ring out of her jewelry box and talked to me all about it for like 15 mins. AW much? I do not understand people like this!
So no, you are not alone.
Sorry their reaction wasn't what you hoped and was just, well, awkward!
and oh yes, we have more than a few nuts in our family so you are not alone!!
Haha! We had breakfast with MIL the morning after we got engaged. She looked at the ring and said "guess I'll need to get a new stone now that hers is bigger than mine." (And mine is not big btw).
AW is right!
And Star-your aunts sound like the people who find out someone is engaged and go, "well, marriage is so tough" or "good luck with that" instead of "congratulations!"
People amaze me.
