Bureaucracy/red tape/hierarchy

At your job.

For you, what is an acceptable level?  Do you like a certain amount of red tape to perform a function?  If it doesn't bother you at all, why? If it does, explain too.

Re: Bureaucracy/red tape/hierarchy

  • I work in the finance department of one of those large multinational corporations.  There's a great deal of red tape and required "segregation of duties" due to SOX.  It requires a lot of communication with people in other groups within the company, which is great - but for something as simple as a customer asking for a cosmetic change to an invoice - we can't do that even when it would take two minutes in Adobe - we have to send it back to the department that processed the order.  Red tape and bureacracy causes a lot of rework and wasted time.  But it is what it is.  I'd rather deal with the red tape to show that we're above board.

  • I work for a public agency so a certain amount of bureaucracy is expected, not to mention necessary in order for our activities to be transparent and accountable to the public. Where I work is not nearly so bad as state or federal agencies though. I'd say redundancy and waste are pretty minimal, and staff are pretty well empowered to carry out their work using our best professional judgment. Most people here have at least a master's degree though, and are highly competent at their jobs.

I'm the SOX manager for a large multinational corp - so same response here.  Sometimes, it does tend to be overkill and a pain - but having a good system in place has saved our butt on a few things.

  • Dude, I work for the DoD.  I practically manufacture red tape for a living.

It doesn't bother me, mainly because I don't let it.  It's not going anywhere.  Well, that, and the processes (what we affectionately call the "wickets") do serve an important purpose around here.

    This is my siggy.
  • I have a love/hate relationship with all of those things in that I see the need for them but sometimes they're just a PITA.

  • I've been on both ends (in HR, where we had to enforce all the annoying road blocks, and now, where I have no say with anything, ever).  I get where rules are good and general structure is needed.

But sometimes, hoo boy. I just had my 6-month evaluation where I'm now a "career" employee instead of probationary, and in my self-eval I stated that I'd like to have a little more say in where my position is headed and would like to be able to voice concerns when big issues arise.  Right now, I don't have any power to change inadequacies or fix errors without 7 people coming into it.  My boss basically patted me on the head and said, "our department is based on a strict heierarchy, and it will never change.  So put it out of your mind." lol.  Okay, then.

She's frustrated with it, too, so I know she's in my corner.  But we can't fix ANYTHING, even stupid things that are obviously failing and costing us time and money.
