Talk to me about nursery furniture
What pieces did you have in the nursery? Crib, changing table, dresser, rocking chair?
Convertible vs. nonconvertible crib?
Where did you get yours?
Anything else I need to consider?
I know it's way early for me to be worrying about this, but I'm having a bad week and need something fun to focus on for a little while.
Re: Talk to me about nursery furniture
We went for a convertible crib from ::gulp:: bru because we had a coupon for 20% off. We got this one but in white: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3012755
Changing tables are a giant waste of money, IMO (like from a set from say BRU or something and not to mention they look cheesy) so what I did was got this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20067829/ The changing pad and diaper caddy fit on it perfectly. We also got the dresser to match: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00067830/ . I really wanted to get furniture that could grow with her and I love the big drawers.I like Ikea because the stuff is super cheap and I found the Hemnes furniture to be really sturdy.
I didn't want a rocking chair and wanted more comfort so we got a full out rocking recliner instead.
I didn't want a convertible crib but it was only $50-100 more for what I felt was a better piece of furniture. I plan to move max into a bed and won't convert it (if at all) until maybe the last child. I plan to keep the nursery/crib in tact for whenever there's a baby 2, etc.
ETA: purchased at Baby Supermart
A chair that rocks. I would have gotten one that reclines too in hindsight to save my poor neck when I'd pass out in there during the early months (aka 7 mo).
ETA: purchased at a regular furniture store (Mealey's? can't recall)
An ottoman or nursing stool for said chair.
And a table/lamp next to chair for mom's drink. My end table doubles as a book case.
A hamper
Contrary to HW I do have a changing table but I use window seat storage as a dresser. If I needed a dresser I would have also attached a changing pad to the top and made that dresser do double duty.
ETA: purchased at BRU
And room/storage for toys for when I need him entertained upstairs while I prep/change.
we have:
crib- apparently convertible but it doesn't look like the typical convertible crib. hella expensive but the only one that would fit in the space
armoire- no closet, so this is his closet
dresser- with changing pad on top so we didn't need a separate changing station. we actually use ours all the time but i know people who think they are a complete waste since they change the kiddo where ever.
shelving unit with wicker baskets for diapering and bath supplies.
we don't have room for anything else but we have a rocker in the living room that we adore. it is from bassett and looks like a regular leather club chair and we got a storage cube ottoman to match (from target because we are cheap like that).
We actually got a good deal on furniture at BRU...we had to get two cribs bc we're having twins (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3725213&searchURL=false) Probably not the ones I would've chosen if we only had to buy one, but they are convertible. We also bought two dressers from there--they were both originally $349 but on clearance for $99 and are actually a decent size (can't find them on the website anymore to link to them).
I agree with pp--changing tables are a waste--we actually bought a small bookshelf from ikea (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60135299/) to put bins in with necessities for easy access and have fastened the changing pad to the top of it--it fits perfectly, and everything we'll need for diaper changes is within reach.
We do have a glider and ottoman--we actually bought it cheap from my brother and sister-in-law. We have two older kids and I never had one with them, and I thought it would be nice to have one with the twins, but I'm not exactly sure how much use I'll get out of it.
One thing I will suggest just based on my personal preference is to not get a huge bulky highchair no matter how cute some of them are--I had big ones with my older sons and they took up so much room. This time around we got the smaller ones that buckle right onto the chair, I think they're the Fisher Price space saver ones--just saves so much room.
I don't know how far along you are but I started registering pretty early, which I think worked out better for us in the long-run. You're going to be doing so much research on which products are better, etc. it's nice to get a headstart before you're in the store with a scanning gun looking at 50 of the same type of item wondering which one is best for your situation!
We have a crib, dresser, rocking chair, small bookcase and a filing cabinet (short and wide) that we placed the changing pad on top.
The crib was given to us used but if we would have bought one, I would not have bought a convertible. They are pricey, you have to buy the conversion kit and if you plan to have more than one kid, you are either going to have to buy another crib or a bed anyway.
The rocker was my great grandmother's chair. I just needed to buy a cushion. If I was going to buy one, I would have bought the Ikea Poang chair. Gliders, while nice, are huge and expensive.
You don't need a changing table. Yes, they look nice but honestly, when you are downstairs with the baby, are you going to go upstairs just to use the changing table? No, you'll change them on the couch or floor or whatever surface is closest. And once they really start moving around, you're not going to want to have the baby on the changing table.
Now that I think about it, we didn't buy any of the furniture new. The bookshelf and filing cabinet/changing table was already in the room (it used to be an office).
We bought the dresser used off of CL. Regular baby furniture is ridiculously expensive and made of cheap plywood or MDF so I wanted to get a solid piece we could use in the future.
Our crib and dresser are medium wood and the bookshelf and filing cabinet are pine. They obviously don't match but I am ok with that and wanted to try and use what I had first and then buy used second.

We got the Eastside Crib from BRU too. It got a high rating in the baby bargains book and was hardwood, so after a 20% coupon it was under $300 - sold. We got the traditional one, which doesn't convert to a full bed. I didn't care about the converable-ness. I can get a regular bed on CL all day long when she is older.
We have a dresser that doubles as a changing station (made by dh dad), and a cushy glider (that I haven't even spent an hour in), from bbb. A small table next to the chair (yard sale, then painted and a new knob). Bookcase from Ikea.
You can see my set up when you visit.

What pieces did you have in the nursery? Crib, Yes changing table yes, dresser yes, rocking chair No - I had a rocking chair that worked for me. The chairs didn't seem worth the price to me ... I should say that I'm glad I didn't buy it since I sat more on the living room couch then the rocking chair. The rocking chair took up a lot of room in DS room.. now it's in storage since he was about 1 yo
Convertible vs. nonconvertible crib? Convertible
Where did you get yours?
We purchased it all from BRU w/ 20% discount. We also went to delaware for tax free shopping
Anything else I need to consider? I think the checklist that BRU offered was helpful. I also went to BRU with a new mom .. she helped pick out the things I needed and didn't really need
Convertible crib from Walmart. Check out Baby Bargains to help you pick a crib.
Dresser from IKEA. It was the perfect height for changing. I'm in the minority but I change the kid on it every time he needs to be changed. My back is so bad that I really needed that.
We have a long and low bookcase from IKEA that I got specifically so he could use it like a bench when he gets older.
We also got another piece of furniture from IKEA. It's basically a square in the size of a small-ish dresser with 4 open cubes in it. We got the bins that fit the cubes and I use that for storing toys etc. I can't remember the name of the furniture.
ETA: we used the Poang in the nursery and switched to a rocking chair about 6 months ago. The Poang was ok but Tommy really likes to be rocked and the Poang was more of a bounce. I'm using my great-great grandmother's rocking chair which is super comfy.
Our nursery is suuuuper tiny (I am talking 8x9) so all we have is a crib, a dresser with a changing pad on top and an old school rocking chair. We did not get a convertible crib because I plan to have more kids, and instead of purchasing another crib for baby #2 while the monster sleeps in the daybed, I would just get him his own bed when it comes time.
Here are pictures of our nursery

What pieces did you have in the nursery? Crib, changing table, dresser, rocking chair?
Crib, dresser, recliner. Recliner is full size rocker/recliner from American Signature Furniture.
We only have room for one big piece of furniture so we went with a regular dresser. Got a good sized piece that should be enough her whole childhood. Decided to forgo the changing table, we always change her downstairs anyway.
Convertible vs. nonconvertible crib? Convertible since that's the one we liked. Don't know if we'll ever convert.
Where did you get yours?
We went to BabySuperMart in Broomall.
Anything else I need to consider?
We also got a bookcase as a gift, it's really nice to have in there.
In the nursery right now is convertible crib, six drawer chest, changing table/low chest with drawers, glider/no ottomon, and JD's toddler bed and I have the closet double hung. Honestly if I didn't have both kids in there I could do without one of the pieces but we needed the extra storage.
Anna will be getting her own room soon, I only plan to buy her a convertible crib and large six drawer chest and big comfy chair.
A lot of people say you don't need a changing table but honestly, I think it's a necessity especially when I was pregnant with a toddler and bending was difficult. I still use mine for both kids, even my three year old. Ok, so he may not fit laying down but i sit him up there to put on shoes, dry him off, etc And I love my glider, I would definitely get something that moves and not a stationary chair. and if you have the room, go for an ottomon, so many times I wish I had something to rest my feet on and I am sliding over the toddler bed to use as a foot stool.
I have gotten furniture at USA Baby which is now closed and Norman's in SP
The crib is convertible and I plan on buying another for Anna since she will need her own furniture.
chose to buy a pricier set in hopes that it will last looooong but we bought something that could be unisex and will grow with the kids, thing 2 and 3 have both used the crib. And Jonathan will have that furniture until he moves out (hopefully).

I have a convertible crib (which we do not plan on converting. But rather using it for #2 when the time comes). It's Graco Lauren in espresso and got great reviews from baby bargains. We have the matching dresser with 3 drawers and small side cabinet.
Contrary to popular opinion, we also have the matching changing table and I love it. Actually V loves it. I like the height of it and we have some play time on there. I get the biggest smiles out of him because I can put my face close to his without killing my back (it's the small things, my friends...).
We also have a glider but one of the more recliner looking ones from BRU but it doesn't actually recline. We have the matching ottoman. These are my favorite pieces in the nursery.
Our crib is from Bru online. Converts to toddler daybed. I don't like the look of most convertibles once they're converted.
I refinished my childhood dressers-they were stained but now they're white. added new hardware and I now, love them. I use the long dresser with a changing pad instead of a changing table.
I went a little non traditional with the rocker. I don't like the look of most gliders and I wanted something that would transfer to another room at a later time. I wanted a rocker/recliner. I got a brown leather rocker/recliner that swivels. It was on sale from Macy's-I got them down to 400 from 1100! I can say it was the best thing in the nursery and the piece I've used every.single.day of her life.
Baby bargains was the best book ever for shopping- made things less overwhelming for sure!
I'm such an odd duck when it comes to this.
I used my changing table ALL the time. In retrospect I wish we had gotten the dresser style.
I didn't use my crib at all. Brooks wouldn't sleep in it so it was up for display purposes only, he let me put him down in it a few times while awake, but he hated it and by 10 months could crawl out of it. If I had to do it all over again I would have done a Montessori type of room.
I second all the people that say the chair is the most important piece of furniture in the room. We didn't have enough space to get the recliner I really wanted to we got a glider that reclines. (I'm happy to part with it if it meets your style.) Again if we hadn't gone with the crib I could have gotten the really nice chair and man oh man do I wish we had.
Then we have a dresser in his closet and that's it for his room.
Also, I couldn't remember the name of our crib.
Here it is:
http://www.babyletto.com/products/modo-3-in-1-convertible-crib
Easiest assembly ever. I actually put most of it together myself.
We didn't spend much on furniture. Here's what we have in our nursery:
Crib - I wanted an Oeuf crib but couldn't justify spending $1000. After slaving over reviews, we decided on this one (it's held up really well and looks great!) We also liked the Ikea Guliver. http://www.walmart.com/ip/14659336
Dresser - I painted a small dresser that we already owned
Rocker - I hate gliders with a passion, so we got an Ikea Poang rocker.
Bookcase - Ikea Expedit (we have it on its side so it won't tip over)

No changing table...we just have a diaper caddy on top of the dresser for all of the "stuff," and put the changing pad on the floor! Super easy and we can put it away in the closet when we aren't using it.
We also don't have a bedding "set" -- I just bought a couple sheets from dwellstudio. You won't want the bumper or comforter in the beginning anyway.
Check out ohdeedoh.com and click on kids room tours, for inspiration.
Convertible crib, low dresser (which we used as a changer on top with a pad), bookcase, and a rocking chair (sort of a family heirloom).
I think convertible cribs are so smart, but looking back, I wish I would have chosen a crib that converts into a twin size instead of a full.
The entire set is the Morgan set from JCPenney.
