Clicky: Alcohol vs. anxiety/depression/etc meds
After the "1-2 drinks a day" thread, it got me wondering how you guys feel about anxiety/depression/etc meds like Xanax and other drugs that people take to alter their moods.

How do you define mental health issues?

uw: I think the majority of mental health issues are serious enough for medication.
This poll was brought on after I read a thread on a different board about people talking about taking Xanax and similar pills before visiting their ILs (anxiety related, but only wanted to be medicated then, not any other time). I also feel that society pushes a lot of women to be "Stepford Wife happy" and some people feel they need prescription medication to reach this "perfection." This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think it's okay to be moody/snarky/bummed sometimes and not have everyone think you are always happy/perfect.

ok the poll makes sense now.
I think that drinking while on certain types of medications can be a slippery slope. If it is done with care and moderation I am sure a majority of people would be ok. There is potential for trouble though I imagine.
I have friends who take Xanax and have a drink before they fly. I would never choose to do that but I trust them to make their own decisions. I did joke with the hubs before I had my last MRI I should have a mimosa with my Xanax but did not really think that would be too smart!
I am taking pain medication right now and have had a couple glasses of wine when we have been out but I am careful and space it out. I don't take a handful of pills WITH the wine for example..,
So, er, are you using 'alcohol' here as an alternative to medication? Like, rather than deal with your anxiety/depression/whatever with meds, instead deal with it by "having a few"/getting tipsy/getting hammered?
Or as, like, drinking in general/socially?
I would hope it's more of the later. It's drinking casually (not necessarily socially) and meds (not necessarily essential, but makes situation(s) easier)

Heh, all right. I am adamantly opposed to alcohol for the former, but perfectly fine with it for the latter, which is why I asked.
Danke!
