what do you know about Georgia?
I had asked about Hawaii while we were waiting on answer, and Hawaii is a no-go. We were hoping if not there, then Washington state, but the reenlistment officer said she didn't think we had a chance there either. She gave us the options of Fort Stewart in Georgia or Bliss in Texas. So, my question is to you ladies, does anyone know anything about Stewart? We seem to be more drawn to there since it's closer to home. Just wanna see if I can find anything out. Thanks!
Re: what do you know about Georgia?
Georgia has delicious peaches. thats about all I know about that.
I changed my name
Lol. I know it's hot and has peaches.
What is the Hinesville area like? I know some bases have great surrounding towns and others don't.
If there's anyone that has been based there, how is the base? On-post housing?
I know the weather is hot and humid and hurricanes are a huge possibility. But east coast seems better than our other choice(El Paso, Texas). Plus it's closer to home. And I really miss the coast. The mountains are beautiful and amazing, but I miss the beaches and ocean.
Now I really want a peach....
We just left Fort Stewart after almost 3 years, I miss it. You either love it or hate it. Hinesville is small- a walmart, Kroger, Food Lion, handful of chain-sit down restaurants, the usual fast food places and that's about it. The PX is pretty nice and the commissary isn't bad. It's about a 45 minute drive to Savannah where everything else is. Downtown is awesome.
Post housing, depends on how many kids you have. We don't have kids and only qualified for a 2bedroom quad plex apartment style house that was pretty much falling apart, we weren't about to pay $1400 a month for that. We lived in 2 different houses off post, one in Allenhurts(about 10 miles away from post) and the other in Hinesville, both were great. Our house in Hinesville was in the neighborhood next to the golf course, LOVED the neighborhood. They have some really crappy areas off post and a few nice ones. A lot of good neighborhoods are off Airport road, there's a gate over there. A lot of people also choose to live in Richmond Hill, there's a Walmart, Kroger, few restaurants and it's only 15 minutes to Savannah. The houses and neighborhoods are much nicer, but also a lot more for rent. I know a few people who chose to live there instead of Hinesville because the school district was much better.
There are some other towns around Fort Stewart to live in, Ludowici has nice houses but I don't think they have any grocery store of anything, it's about a 15 minute drive to post. Pooler, I think is about 45 minutes away. Some people also live in Savannah.
You're close to a lot of vacation opportunities, Disney is only 4 hours away, Jacksonvill is 2 hours, DC is I think 8 hours. It's really not a bad place.
We've also been stationed at Fort Bliss, I hated it.

You forgot to mention the peaches.
You know, I don't think I had one peach while living there. I never even came across any peach trees! It is close to Vidalia though, home of the sweet vidlia onion, maybe you can eat one of those instead.

Thank you. That's exactly the info I was looking for. From what we got from friends about Bliss, it doesn't seem like somewhere we would want to go.
Thanks again!
I like the idea of being so close to nice vacation spots and we'd be about 13 hours or so from home.

I didn't have any peaches when I lived in Georgia either. Too busy eating proper BBQ.
I can't answer your questions about the base, but I can tell you Georgia is amazing, and you will probably fall in love with it, the people and the food. The summers are rough though (esp on your hair)
I live in Savannah and I loooooooove it. Personally, I don't like Hinesville. It just some dinky little town with a KFC, walmart, and a tiny movie theater. However, it's only 45 minutes away from Savannah. So if we had to live in Hinesville, I wouldn't care. I could come into town easy peasy if I felt like hitting up the mall, eating at Olive Garden or going on a sewing bender at Joanns. No biggie.
But I wouldn't go to Bliss unless I had no choice. I've been to El Paso. I hated it. Full.stop. But I have no experience with the place as a military base though. I've only visited El Paso as a whole.

Georgia --> Atlanta --> Varsity --> brownie --> orgasm.
This is what I know.
I hate Georgia with a vehement passion. I'm sure I would like Savannah but I haven't been there. Not impressed with Atlanta, don't like the Falcons without Vick, hate the SLOWNESS of the south. I can't wait until we get out of here. DH and I have decided no matter how we travel or where we travel, we will completely bypass the entire state of Georgia no matter the cost, unless it's flying.
Yay! I'm a total Debbie Downer about Georgia, but we're at Gordon and Augusta sucks balls, so whatevs.
I just came in to drool over Vidalia burgers (not like onion on top, but ground into the meat).
And peaches were a much bigger deal when I lived in SC than in GA.
We are in Savannah. DH is stationed at Hunter AAF. FT Stewart isn't bad. Hinesville sucks but there are great little towns around it. Look into housing around Allenhurst, Bloomingdale, Richmondhill and Midway.
There are always things to do around here. From fall to spring, there are festivals pretty much every weekend. There are several beaches with in a short distance from Stewart.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks so much for all the info! We talked about it more last night and he didn't want to go to Bliss all that much either. So he signs for Stewart today!
I can't wait to be near a beach again. I'll probably end up in Savannah a lot if that's where the closest craft store is. And I'll guess that there's no Barnes and Noble in those little towns. But H likes small town better than city.
Thanks again ladies. If I think of anything else, or he does, I'll ask.
Savannah isn't really a city lol. I mean technically it is but it's actually pretty small town even for its size. We have a Joann's, a Michael's, an AC Moore, a little sewing shop downtown, as well as at least two local knitting shops though I've only been to one of them. And we do have a Barnes and Noble.
Richmond Hill might fit what you're looking for though. There's no Barnes and Noble but it's like 25 minutes from one depending on what time of day you're trying to get over there. lol

3 major craft stores and a book store, I can do that. As long as I have that, I'm pretty much set. Anything else I'm willing to drive a little more or order it online. The only things I've seen about Savannah is all the haunted shows that get done down there.
My dad lived in Marietta for six months and calls it the lowest period of his life, lol. H also really hates Atlanta, and he's from GA, that's why he's not a Falcons fan. You guys should totally try and take a long weekend in Sav before you leave GA, it's so worth it. Even in the off season.
Yeah, why?
I'm curious as well.
If it helps, I don't like ATL or Augusta but I love Savannah.
