Vent: I hate home warranties!!!

*our a/c has been making this loud rrrrrrrr noise since July. warranty company sends a guy out. he has to order a part. never hear back from him. call back yesterday and he says warranty won't cover it b/c this is considered "preventative maintenance" since the unit is still cooling.

*our sprinkler system didn't seem to have the right water pressure so we call the warranty company back in June. send a plumber out. he finds "nothing". we get a $250 water bill. we check the sprinkler system ourself: find one of the heads blown off and a geyser for 20min every other day when the sprinkler turns on. call the plumber. he will have to special order the head. haven't heard back from him. called yesterday - he still hasn't received the part.

*this morning: go to take a shower. no hot water. water heater not working. grrrrrr. call the warranty company. they're sending someone out but not until tonight b/c the closest they have service is from nashville, tn. they're only going to repair it (for the $75). it's a 17yr old unit. a brand new one costs $275. seriously?!?! gah. wtf.

Re: Vent: I hate home warranties!!!

  • We dropped ours after the first year.  I'm glad we had it then, because our 20 year old furnace was condemned, and we got a good break on the replacement.  We had issues with our new a/c units and water heater the first year too.  Everything in house is still under manufactures warranty and they wouldn't pay for anything, but they did gladly take our service fees.  I went through and inventoried our warranty expiration dates, and we will probably pick it back up in 5 years if we are still here.

  • Ours came out three times and fixed every moving/working part of our dishwasher for surely more than the cost of a new one, but they wouldn't replace it. I hate it because I can't stand a dinner plate straight up without  the spray thing hitting it, but at least it works now.

  • We had our warranty for the first year or so, and found that we still had to pay for a visit (i think $50), and they usually try to repair things rather than fix them.  We ended up not renewing.  Granted, we have had to replace 2 water heaters in the last 2 years, but I am sure we evened out from not paying the warranty for the last 4 years.  But it's always a gamble!  Hopefully you will get everything resolved!
  • the only reason we're using them is b/c the sellers paid for it. i will never get/pay for a home warranty myself.....and yup, we've had to pay every service call. chaps my ass. oh well
  • I hated our home warranty as well.  The first year the sellers paid for it, I renewed it, BIG mistake.  The idiot tried to fix our AC and ending up completely killing it.  We did not know until we said screw the home warranty and got an AC/Heating Company come out and look at it and tell us someone hooked up parts wrong and burnt the unit.  Awesome! 9000 dollars later we had a new unit and the AC/Heating Company telling us home warranties are a waste of money.  They ended up knowing the contractor who killed our unit and told us he was a new guy to the industry.
