Geographically speaking, how close are you to family?

We live 2 hours from my parent and sister, 3 hours from brother and 1 hour from in-laws. It is a blessing and a curse.

Watching Modern Family last night, I wish we lived less than an hour from both sides;  close enough to go for sunday dinner, yet not close enough to borrow a cup of sugar, know what i mean?

so how close do you live to family and do you see each other daily/weekly/monthly/seasonally?

sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.

Re: Geographically speaking, how close are you to family?

  • Both families live within the county.

My brother and his wife, however, live in Michigan - so we really only see them when they're home to visit. Step siblings are in MA - same situation.

My parents live 20 minutes away - We have dinner with them once a week, or once every other week if we have a lot going on. My mom and I work a town away from each other and meet for lunch once a week. I also work in the same town as where my grandfather lives, so I try to stop by his house on my lunchbreak once a week or once every other week.

  • Parents and siblings 7 miles.  I eat there 1-2 nights a week, J sleeps there amost every Thursday and Fridays are our shopping day.

InLaws & 1 bil- 10 miles.  We see them 1x a week sometimes 2, if I am in their town I stop by unannounced, if car is in driveway I walk in.

BIL- is stationed in California and deployed for 1 year to Africa and now Afghanistan and when he is home I avoid him like plague.  SIL is in college, thankfully I don't see her much 1x a month

My grandparents are all gone with the exception of GMA who hasn't known who anyone is for 9 years now.

DH's are in Westchester, I see Grandpa 1x a week, he also has one of my dogs.

other grandparents 2x a month usually there is something going on for the family

21 of 24 cousins on DH's side all live in same town.

I see DH's family more then he does (extended) because I take kids to visit or do things a lot.

It is a curse and a blessing as you said.

  • Parents & siblings live 2 hours away but have a second home 45 mins away which they are at almost every weekend.  So, we see them every other weekend or so.

Inlaws live upstairs.  The whole "borrow a cup of sugar thing"?  It is more like ::Knock knock::  "I am doing a load of whites, have anything to toss in?"

  • we live a few miles apart from both sets of parents. siblings are all further - we have one in bergen county, nj, then SIL is in VA and my sis is in MA. we both have extended family in the county too.

i see my parents very often - they stop by to see the girls, they help me with some errands sometimes during the week - they have access to my home so they drop off or pick up stuff as needed.  my extended and immediate family gets together often for dinners too.

ILs we see less frequently. they operate on a different schedule than we do, ie - my kids are up early and they aren't. they're free when nap time starts, etc. they rarely hold family get togethers.

  • My parents- a mile away. this actually was not intended but we fell in love with a house in the same town. Its actually been great! Especially while working on the house and me being home alone alot. But also my parents are the type that wont come over without calling first.

My moms parents- live next door to my mom, but honestly i could go WEEKS without seeing them

My dad's dad and his girlfriend- live in Long Island. We see each other a few times a year.

DH's mom and dad (divorced) live 25 mins away along with his brothers who still live home

I have two brothers- one is 30 mins away and the other just moved 40 mins away.  I actually see them alot normally but Im not sure what will happen with the one that moved 40 mins away now though :(

  • Both of our families are in the Midwest, so we usually only see each family once or twice a year.  I grew up with all of my aunts and uncles and cousins around all the time, and am sad that my child won't have that.  Sad

  • Migette - funny you mention grandparents.  my grandma and grand aunt are in florida.  i spent every summer with them in puerto rico and alternated christmas between pr and ny.

i am 36 y.o.  to this day, when either i or my grandladies get ready to head to the airport i am a blubbering mess. last night i spoke to the bitties and was practically in tears because i miss them so.

  • My dad and gram are 4hrs away. Sister is 3.5hrs away. Mom is 90miles away and I haven't seen her in 2 years. Moms family is in Canada. ILs are next door and both SILs are close too (too close)

  • My mom lives 45min from us. I see her a lot since I work right down the road. Where we live is too far for her to drive. So unless she comes up with my bro/sil for a visit we don't see her much. I will make plans for bkfast and shopping once a month and bring A to see her. My inlaws live 20 min from us. If we've seen them 10 times this year, that's a lot.

  • My ILs are rightfuuckingnext to us but I go days without seeing them sometimes. Other times, I'll see them daily. They see Mini pretty often bc she can NOT stop bothering them. LOL

My SIL, BIL and niece live 4 miles away. We see SIL and niece once a week normally or once every other week when things are hectic. I see my BIL a bit more frequently, since we work together, but not every day.

MH has lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins who all live within 10 miles from us. Some of us see each other a lot, others just on holidays, etc.

My side of the family lives in the Bronx so I only see them once every few weeks in the winter months. In the summer, my sister and her kids come over to our house once a week.

I would like to see my side of the family more often but life kinda gets in the way sometimes. That's something we've all been working on this year.

  • ILs: 10 minutes, we see them about 5 times a week (they visit their granddaughters next door a lot and put them on the bus in the am).  Plus, they like regular fixes of the baby.  It's been great since J was born.  I'll take all the help I can get.

Dad and sister: about 40 minutes.  My Dad is up just about every day working on the house.  Otherwise I'd see him and sis at least once a week.

SIL and nieces: right next door.  DH and SIL had a fallout, so I rarely see her now.  I used to see the girls just about every day, but since baby came, it's just a couple of times a week

  • My Mom and brothers all live within 45 minutes from me.  I don't see them regularly.  When I was young, we did a Sunday dinner type thing with my maternal grandparents but that ended when they passed away.

My Dad has moved to f-ing Virginia, and I'm not pleased.  I haven't seen him since the Spring and that's a whole other whiny rant/vent post that I don't have the energy to cry about these days.  I miss him like crazy. When he lived here I saw him constantly.  I've always been closer to my Dad than my Mom.

I don't see my brothers much because they are off with their own families.

MIL lives with us.  *groan*  But I can go for DAYS without actually having to speak to her or see her.  When I do, she usually has something snarky to say about my Hubby.

BIL & his family live 5 minutes away.  Hubby sees them more than I do.  I usually work weekends so I don't always make their little get togethers for football and such.

I do have cousins and what not scattered in Rockland and Westchester. I see them on occasion.

To be honest, if I could see my brothers at least once a week, I'd be really happy.  I'd love to have Sunday dinner here, but MIL gets uppity about guests (even her own family) so I don't always get my way.  Instead I call/text them pretty regular.

  • My parents, brother (he lives with my parents still), grandparents and aunt, uncle and cousin all live within 5 minutes of us. We see my parents a couple times a week either for a quick dinner or to run errands together. Thankfully N really gets a long with them! We often go to dinner with them and my grandparents and my grandmas brother (he lives like 20 min away) on Friday nights. This was all prior to this week when my grandpa fell and broke his shoulder so he can't drive so were all just going over there to visit :(

As for ILs, they all live about 30 min away and we can go up to 3 months without seeing SIL and BIL but we usually see MIL, FIL and GMIL more than that? I'd say we see them every other week on average. Some months more, some months less.

I can't imagine not living near my family. I really spend so much time with them, I can't imagine not being near them.

  • Ughhh! I wish I had family that lived closer or that I saw more often!

    My mom- Florida

    My dad- deceased

4 older brothers- spread all over the country, 1 in Germany

1 lil' sister- Manhatten (I love her to death and wish we could meet up weekly)

In Laws- about an hour away (I love them to death but SIL still lives there with her 2 LO's and I'm having issues with her. )

I also have tons of nieces and nephews that I would love to see more and spoil more!

  • My mom....same town...5 minutes.  See at least 2/week because that is how often she watches DD.  She usually calls me every day.  My father died 7 years ago.

MIL...she is in a nursing home 15 minutes away.  FIL is deceased also.

My grandparents (both sets) and two aunts all lived in the same town I am in also.  One aunt moved 2 hours away and the grands are all deceased.

Brother and SIL and family are one hour away...we see them every few months.  HOWEVER, in less than a month, they move to London so that will change greatly.

BILs...15-20 minutes away...maybe 2/year?  one of them i am lucky if we see 1/year.

SILs...one is far...4 hours, the other in the same town...see her a couple times/year.

  • So, my family is from NJ to Massachusetts!  Parents are in NJ(at least once every other month), My 1st brother is in Massachusetts with a neice and a nephew(we see them once a year), my sister is in CT(we try to gtg monthly) with another neice and nephew, and my 2nd brother just moved to Harrisburg PA with my 1 neice(we'll see how much I see them-they just moved-but we both agreed to try monthly).  DH family is now all in the same county as us-so ALL the time! IL's babysit for T twice a week.  And his brother we don't see nearly as much as we should-we live 8 miles from each other, and hardly see each other!   I actually see my sister more than him!  Crazy I know!  But I do wish that I lived closer to my Parents I wish my parents had more of a relationship with DD.  But I always say that a relationship is a 2 way st.-both of the parties have to try and see one another-This is something that we deal with on both sides!
  • 2 blocks from my IL's, 2.5 hours from my parents and 7 hours from my sister. Long distance really stinks and it's making the holidays much more difficult as our families grow :(
