He responded with dead silence on the phone followed by a very slow, "Oooookaaaaaaaaaay, that's not quite what we expected, huh?"
And then I could hear him grinning and getting all flummoxed.
He's really excited.
I was up at 3am with cramps and some spotting though, so I'm feeling stressed. I'm enough of a hypochondriac as it is; this is going to push me over the edge. I tried to get an appointment with my doctor today, but no such luck. The earliest I could get in was next week.
So, that's all kinds of no good.

I hope it's nothing. I had tons of spotting early on and everything turned out okay. I know how unnerving it is though so I hope it stops soon. The cramping can also be normal because things are moving around and stretching to make room for baby and the placenta.
Can you call your doctor again and tell them your concerns to see if they can make time to see you earlier?
