vet called in wrong medicine

fuming. i picked up meds for my cat this a.m. at the pharmacy (made a special trip because she is out). i went to give her the meds and they didn't look right (they were white and they have always been pink in the past). i looked on the label and sure enough it was the wrong med - hydralazine is what we should have gotten - they gave us hydroxyzine. i called the pharmacy and they filled the right prescription - the vet's office called in the wrong thing.

what makes me mad is when i called the vet so they could call in the right prescription, all they said was "okay we'll call in a new one." um, huh? isn't this a pretty serious mistake? mind you, i haven't looked up the two meds. perhaps they are similar and nothing would have happened. but i really wish i had gotten a little more of an apology! i love this vet's office but i'm so mad right now. i'm considering calling later and talking to the OM. what do you think?

Re: vet called in wrong medicine

  • i looked up the two meds. the one they gave us is for allergies. she needs heart meds. every time we give her a new med we have to talk to her cardiologist to make sure she can take it with all her heart issues. not to mention to make sure it won't interact with her other meds. so not only could she have not gotten what she needs to get for her heart, but she could have been harmed by this other stuff. i'm upset because i was seriously seconds from giving it to her because the names are so similar and except for "HCL" after the one, i thought when reading them they were the same thing.

i called the vet back. i didn't ask for the OM but i did ask for one of the ladies that has been there forever. she wrote down my concerns and was understanding. i feel better and also reminded that ultimately it's up to us to make sure we are getting the right meds!

  • I'd have gone down there and thrown the meds at whomever called it in.

Yeah.... restraint is not my strong suit. It's amazing that I'm actually a very peaceful person with a level head most times. LOL

  • I'm so glad you checked!!  I would've been livid...that's not something that they should be messing up.
  • Good for you for paying attention to the meds!!

  • that's scary and annoying. i would certainly call the OM, esp b/c you don't want this kind of mistake happening again.

  • I don't know how it works in animal medicine world but in the human medicine world that is a big freaking deal in the way of occurrence reporting to governing authorities. I'm not really sure how it should be handled in the veterinary world. ,
