Writing jobs? Editing?

I need a new job. I started out making $15 an hour in 2000. I have gone up to $28 a few years later, then down to $25 (the company had to lower pricing) and now down to $22.50. I have tried to find other jobs in this industry -- closed captioning, but many pay even less $14/hr.

What kinds of jobs are out there for writing and editing that would make $40,000 a year or more and are not hourly?

  • Pharma companies and their contractors are often looking for copy writers.

  • Technical writing (probably depends on the industry, though).

(I wish I could give you some specific leads; unfortunately, everything I know of right now is hourly, no benefits, and no guarantees of a specific number of hours per week.)

  • I'd like to second the tech writing.  Highest paid gig you can get as a writer.

Also PR involves a lot of writing.

  • I agree with PR and technical writing, and the editor listings I've seen also want writing, since they typically both edit and write for newsletters, magazines, etc.

  • You could try getting a job as a production editor at a publisher. Some of those still involve proof-reading and copy editing, although this is becoming less common. (They are moving to more of a product management role with proof-reading and copy-editing done by freelancers.)

There are some other publishing jobs that pay more than $40K base salary, but they don't involve editing in the traditional sense, even if editor is in the job title. They might involve a good deal of writing (i.e. some marketing roles, and even some sales roles).

  • I'm a full-time, permanent, salaried tech writer. If you can write, tech companies want you. There's lots of tech writing jobs out there.

Can't really tell you about the money... I live in Ontario, so the fact that an entry-level tech writer starts somewhere around $37 000 - $42 000 probably doesn't help you much.

A warning, though: tech writing is not the most exciting work you'll ever do. I'm the only writer at my company, so I do marketing writing as well and love that stuff, way more than the release notes and help files I write for the development team.
