Help With Family Chore List...

Hello Ladies! This is a vent/I need help & ideas on a chore list!

So, I am a full-time student, have 3 part-time jobs, have an internship, and do volunteer work on the weekends in order to fulfill a graduation requirement for school. DH goes to school Monday-Thursday from 1-5:30... as does my SIL who lives with us. When I come home from school I usually have to get ready for work right away. Then, when I come home from work (most nights 10 or later) I am hungry, tired, and have a ton of homework to do. Yes, DH & SIL have homework, but they do their homework on the weekends and generally free to make dinner/clean. Now don't get me wrong, I will clean when I have time. Like if I have a half hour in between classes/work I will load the dishwasher/ wash dishes and then leave again. Tonight is what really made me realize that something needs to be done as far as organizing a schedule. I was talking to DH about what to make for dinner. I made a suggestion and he said and I quote, "I'm not cleaning the whole kitchen for that".

So, needless to say, our biggest issue is the kitchen/dishes. I need ideas/suggestions on making a chore chart of some sort that will be easy to follow/work with our schedules. I will admit I will have a hard time following it/making things equal because I feel like I'm gone 90% of the time and don't physically have the time clean the kitchen, do the dishes, and make dinner all in one night (and who wants to eat at midnight anyways).

What kind of ideas do you ladies have for me? Questions? Feel free to ask! :)

TIA!

Re: Help With Family Chore List...

  • Well...it sounds like you guys need to all sit down (hopefully when everyone is calm/agreeable) and talk about what needs to get done and how you three can split it up.
  • I agree with pp that you guys need to have a sit down.

    But just some thoughts.

Does whoever cooks, also have to clean up the kitchen first?

Do you have to cook for the same day. ie could you cook a meal that could be re-heated the next night, so it doesn't matter what time you make it.

or could you cook on the weekend or when you have a free chunk of time, and do a bg batch that can be frozen into smaller portions?

  • At this point in time while being both incredibly busy & having SIL living with you & your DH, it might make most sense just to split the chores individually.  What I mean is, every "man" for themself.  If your DH wants to make a sandwich or cook himself something for dinner, he is then expected to clean up the kitchen & wash the dishes afterwards.  You are in charge of your own laundry and DH & SIL are in charge of their own.  That way, nobody feels slighted or like they are picking up for your/or anyone's slack.

It may also help to get into any routine you can.  Allot a chore to a specific day of the week and try to stick to it.  DH & I do our laundry on Fridays just because we can wash all of our work clothes at once and then have all weekend to put them away - that's what works best for us.  Find a system that works best for you & your schedule.  I do think all 3 of you should still sit down and come to an agreement for a compromise to make sure things are getting taken care of & everyone is happy.
