I'm pretty long winded, and had this 1/4 of the way typed out and my computer deleted it. Sadness...
So, shorter version:
Layla was born on Thursday, October 20... after my water broke in the shower about 4pm on Wednesday the 19th (Which was the day I picked she'd be born on our baby pool... Layla just had other plans haha) When I got out of the shower and told MH my water had broke he replied "I guess I'll go brush my teeth"... My best friend had gotten there at that exact moment too to drop something off, we just looked at each other, I shrugged and called my doctor to tell her I was heading up. Once we got to the hospital I had to check in, The idiot lady sitting at the window had to basically get my life history - Um Hello, I've been here at the hospital once a week for the last 2 months, and twice a week for the last 2 weeks... really? Nothing's changed. Gah. Meanwhile I had leaked through all of my clothes and clearly looked like i'd peed myself, and had to walk the whole way to the OB floor like that, embarassing.
They admitted me and put me on the monitors, just to find out my contractions were so sporadic & far apart it appeared it was going to be awhile, They told me the doc was coming up soon and to walk around until she got there. When she got there she checked my cervix to find it was 4cm/80% - which was disappointing because thats what I was at on Monday at my 39 week appt. She said to keep walking around and moving and she'd be back in a couple hours to check on me... She came back in at 8pm to see how I was doing, and I wasn't progressing at all, and so she gave me the option to either start pitocin that night, to which it would be a long hard night after not having any sleep since the night before, or sleep through the night and see if my labor would kick in on it's own, and then get put on pitocin in the morning if not. I went with option B.
About 4:30am I started getting some more painful contractions that were waking me up, but still weren't consistent. 8am the doc came in to see how I was doing, and let me know that it was her twin son's birthday and that she had taken the day off and the other doctor was going to be delivering. She suggested to start the pitocin, they wanted to see her be born within the 24hr time range from when my water broke. Once I'd been put on the pitocin I pretty much was tied to the bed, I had to be constantly monitored unless i had to get up to pee. Which SUCKED. Not to mention I was starving, I hadn't eaten hardly anything the day before, and because of the meds & the chance of having to have a C/S they said no food... other than popsicles ![]()
About 2pm I was in pain, Loopy as he!! with the pitocin, but in pain enough that I wasn't happy with being stuck to the bed and couldn't walk through them or anything... I asked for nubain, (Big Regret) as that made me even loopier when mixed with the pitocin, I could follow the conversation between My mom, MIL, MH & BFF but couldn't form a coherent sentence to add to the conversation so I spent the next few hours in and out of it.. Finally about 1/2 hr before I was ready to push (3.5 hrs after the nubain) the pressure from the contractions was getting to me, and the nubain was wearing off, I asked if it was too late to have another dose, they didn't want to do that b/c of the baby - didn't want her to be loopy either, So they said that I could go with an intrathecal, I was nervous as hell about a needle in my back, but a couple more contractions later and I changed my mind... It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would have been, the worst part was sitting up on the side of the bed through 4 contractions while he prepped my back for the injection, and having to sit still through a rather painful contraction I felt like i was sitting on... that super sucked, If I had that to do over again I would have taken the intrathecal earlier before it was too painful to sit up.
At this point I spiked a fever, started itching all over & shivering... which was rather amusing to everyone else, because my nose itched really bad, I was sweating & shivering so bad I looked like a crack addict going through withdrawls. FINALLY 30 minutes later I was ready to push, and after 1 hour of pushing - and the nurse saying "Oh my look at all that hair" about 15 times to the point I wanted to yell "If you say that again you're going to have to pull her out because I'll be too busy screaming at you" When she came out she came out with her head and her right arm at the same time... superman style... while the doc turned to get the bulb syringe to suck out her nose & mouth, she shot her other arm out without me having to push, so that part was pretty easy
She immediately pooped all over me when they put her up on my chest, which was rather amusing, but she was perfect none-the-less. She was able to breastfeed after about 15 minutes but she latched on with pretty much no problem.
My sweet precious Layla Alice Rose was born at 7:10pm, 8lbs 2 oz, and 20.5"
Unfortunately she had a fever when she was born, and because it was over 24 hrs from the time my water broke, and because I had a fever we both had to be put on antibiotics, Layla's IV had to be in for 48 hrs, so we ended up having to stay an extra day in the hospital, so from Wednesday at about 5pm, to Sunday at about 2pm we were pretty much stuck at the hospital, which was awful, we were definitely glad to get home Sunday afternoon. While she was on the iv she had a hard time eating, she was really hard to wake up to eat, the nurses demanded I wake her up to feed her every 3 hrs whether she was hungry or not, but she was getting fluids from the iv... which confused her and made her feel not hungry... BF'ing has been much easier since we've been home for the most part. She's a great baby, sleeping for 2 1/2 - 3 hr stretches during the day and 5-6 1/2 hr stretch at night I can't complain for a 3 1/2 week old!!
Re: Layla's Birth Story
Thanks for sharing! She's precious!
How much does she weigh now?
