The Thanksgiving table

How important do you think it is that everyone be able to fit around one table for thanksgiving dinner? Does it depend on how many people are there? Is it worth it to rearrange furniture just to fit in a bigger table?

We are hosting and there will be 10 people for dinner (all adults, no kids). DH and I are having a "discussion" about how to set up the table. One of us wants to move a bunch of furniture out of the way to make room for one long table. The other wants to use the 2 smaller tables that are already set up (in two separate but adjacent rooms) and split the group, probably 7/3. Moving furniture eliminates a sitting area for pre- and post- dinner hanging out. Not rearranging furniture means splitting up the group for dinner.

Re: The Thanksgiving table

  • Depends on the group. We had this discussion when we thought we would have my parents, DH's mom/husband, and his aunt/uncle for christmas. We can only fit 6 at our table, but with that grouping, there is no good way for 2 ppl to be sitting in the living room, so I was 100% against splitting.

In NJ my family rearranges things for one big, sometimes T-boned table for Thanksgiving, so we fit about 20ppl at one table, and I love that. Pre/post seating isn't an issue because we rearrange just before we sit down to eat. But I would be fine with 3 tables of 6-8ppl too. My thing as a host is just that no one feels left out. To me, depending on the dynamic, having a table of 2-3 ppl in another room might suck for those 2-3 ppl. lol

  • With both my family and H's we usually have 2 tables. Even though all the kids are adults now we always wind up with a kid's table and an adult table.

I think with your situation I would try to put everyone at 1 table.  Is there a way to move the smaller table closer to the main table?

  • We usually end up with people everywhere.  But, most of our gatherings have been 18ish people or more.  If I had 10, I would probably try to fit us all at one table.  I never fully clean up while I have guests over, but inevitably me and a few others end up putting food away, rinsing dishes quickly, etc.  If that's you too, would it be a pain to have your DH and a friend move stuff back real quick for visiting after the dinner?

Or maybe if you have counter space near the table, you could pick up 2-3 cheap stools?  So there will be a few people separated, but still near the table?

  • We usually have one big table for adults and one big table for kids. It does not entail us moving furniture, that would be a crime against humanity to eliminate TV viewing areas.

Oh no worries, the tv viewing area would be unaffected. This would be in the FL room in the back of the house. There's a nook with a loveseat and a rocking chair that would have to move. There's also an oooold tv there, but it's only hooked up to a Roku, so we use it for things like pandora and the occasional netflix.

Given your description of the potential area to be lost, I say absolutely rearrange.

  • I would rearrange the furniture.

  • Personally I would absolutely rearrange the furniture. If it was little kids at a separate table it would be one thing, but I'd hate to split up that small of a group of adults.

  • I hate being split up.  My aunt always makes my mom, sister, and I sit at another table in another room.  I'd rather sit on the couch and eat.

    But that's just me.
