Family Fare Yes card?

I don't regularly shop at Family Fare because their prices are a lot higher than Meijer, but we used to stop there if we needed to run in to get something quick and it was on the way somewhere.  They now have a Yes card that you need in order to get sale prices, and if you don't have the Yes card you can't get those prices.  Does anyone else find this annoying?  I don't like the idea of having to be a member of something in order to get an advertised sale price on groceries.  Thoughts?

Re: Family Fare Yes card?

  • I agree with you.  And I read a really critical article about this somewhere... I wish I remembered where.  Because in order to get the card, you have to give over all of your personal info and contact information.  And a lot of people these days aren't willing to do that.  And, thus, they don't get the card and can't get sales prices.

I have a feeling they're not going to be sticking with this policy long.  I think it's getting a fair amount of heat.

  • The only grocery store in my town is Family Fare. I hated Family Fare before this dumb @$$ Yes card bullcrap and I REALLY hate it now. They have yet to correct our phone number in the system, so if I don't have my card I don't get the sales (The H sometimes has it if he runs to the store). Why would you want to make it that hard for people to shop at your store?!?! Add that to the "never EVER enough cashiers" complaint and this stupid Yes card has pushed me over the edge.

OMG!  Don't even get me started on this.  I can't tell you how many times I've walked out of FF because I got stuck with my one or two items while a 90 year old woman with a full cart took went ahead of me with no other cashiers available and no self-scan lanes open.  I actually had a manager chase me out in the parking lot once to tell me they opened up another lane after seeing me walk out.

Family Fare is slightly closer than Meijer for us, but I'd rather drive the extra 2 miles to Meijer any day.

This is the exact reason I refuse to sign up for the card.

  • The Yes card is just like the cards I got about eight years ago at the Jewel-Osco and Dominick's chains when I lived in Chicago. This type of card has been around for awhile.

I don't have a problem giving my name, email, phone number.  I am more annoyed that I have to have a card present to scan. I prefer the format of the mPerks program. Much easier to just type in a number.

  • HA! We don't even shop at the same one, Wop. Here's a funny story: I was voicing my hatred for Family Fare at my knitting group one time and one of the ladies said, "My son in law is the CEO for FF in West Michigan." She told him all of my complaints and he went to my store! It was better for a bit but they are back to their old sh!t. Everyone in my family knows how much I hate that store, too, so they always mention when something we are eating came from there lol. It's a mother's worst nightmare: long lines, error in prices... Mere almost always has a meltdown when we go there because of the amount of time it takes to do ANYTHING there. Are the aisles really skinny at your store?

It depends on the store.  The one's in Byron Center are skinny, but the Wyoming and Cutlerville aisles are bigger.  Nothing close to Meijer lanes though.

  • D&W use to do a card system back in the day--within the past 8 years, because I remember using it when we lived in our first apartment--and I was SO glad to see when they ended it... and now this again?! Terrible, rotten idea.

    This!

    Thanks for writing my post...

Kroger has one and it annoys the crap out of me when I am visiting my parents and would forget to borrow theirs and have to pay full price. I finally took an application off the customer service desk for the card, but never registered it.

  • I have the yes card & didn't give them any information other than my email. Even then I gave them the email that I use for junk mail. I really dislike Meijer & Family Fare equally. The Meijer stores I have to pick from have horrible layouts & no lanes are open. The self checkouts never work right & the people that work there tend to act like it's a pain to help you. I go to Family Fare when it's not busy (usually a weekend early morning or later at night during the week). The people there have come to know me & are nice. I only have an issue with how expensive some things are. With the Yes card Ben has the main one & I have the one that's supposed to go on a key chain (I just keep it in my wallet). Since I went through my year & a half of unemployment I've done most of my shopping at Aldi & supplement what I can't get there at Family Fare.

  • MissyNa - Aldi's has goat cheese right now - not sure if you are a fan or not. 4 oz for $1.99. The honey goat cheese is pretty good. They also have a blueberry vanilla which i haven't tried but looks interesting.

I was just there tonight! How did I manage to miss this? Probably because I was trying to decide which brie to buy. :o)  I'm sure I'll have to make a run back there since shopping while in a cold-induced haze makes me miss things....even when they're on my list. LOL! Thanks for the tip!

    Oooh thanks!

  • Oh, the Yes card... I wrote a long, firey message on FF's FB wall.  And then I had to delete it (they're a huge sponsor of an organization my husband works for).  I don't want to play games when grocery shopping (I hate those find 5 things in the store with the sale tag and get $_ off).  I just want to buy food for the family to eat.

There's a store 2 blocks from my house, but this card on top of the spotty service sends me to Meijer more often.

Excited for the Aldi on Knapp to open soon.

    OMG!

I have never been to an Aldi but this might put me over the edge. I WANT! Do they all have the same stuff? I thought they were more of a "whatever we get" kind of place.

Go! Bring a quarter for the cart deposit!

It is a little bit of a "whatever we get" kind of place. Mostly they have the same things consistently, but you will find some special buys as they call them. I know they have the goat cheese at Alpine and Cascade. That is, if it hasn't sold out.

Another special buy to look out for - cornbread crackers. Oh my delicious. I love these. And last I checked with the pretzels, no sugar or corn syrup added unlike the Meijer brand and is still almost half the price.

Best part about Aldi, checkout is super fast. All the packages have multiple bar codes so the cashiers can whip items through. Brilliant.

Sorry to go on. My love for Aldi cannot be contained.

  • I have one and I don't so much mind it but I do mind that fact that to get any real "benefit" from it you have to spends over $50 a week at least.

I haven't been to Aldi in Months now I should stop back up there.

Bring your own bags as well! They do have bags there but there is a small charge for them. It's environmentally friendly to just bring your own. :o)

I think you have to have cash or debit for payment--no credit cards. At least, that's how the one at 28th/Cascade is.

If you like gingerbread, check out the dark chocolate covered gingerbread cookies. Happy happy me. :D

  • Yes! You are correct about payment.

I looked at all of the gingerbread cookies they had last night. They all looked sooooo good! I may have to pick up some when I go back for the goat cheese and everything else I missed.

  • I think I hate all grocery stores fairly equally. Which is probably why I drive to Coopersville every other week for milk and eggs, and just put an order in for vegetables through the West Michigan co-op, and try to get the rest at Costco or Harvest Health. And I have DH pick up meat from a butcher near his work whenever we want it for dinner.

Family Fare is the grocery store I use when I just need a couple of items since it's close and not usually crowded (as opposed to the Meijer's near me, which is always busy and I hate their parking lot). The Yes card drives me nuts, only because they keep asking me if i want one! I don't shop enough at the regular grocery store to want to sign up for one.more.thing.

I've only been to Aldi's once, was not impressed with their quality or selection or prices.
