Do you tell people your (if any) dietary restrictions?

So this happens for me from time to time since I'm a vegetarian. I never know if, when invited to dinner with people who don't know, I should tell them. On one hand, I don't want them to have to go out of their way to appease me because I can bring something or I generally have no problem picking around. However, a few times people have just felt awful when they find out I'm a veg. if I don't tell them in advance. So I never know if I should give warning... I'm going to a church dinner for new members tomorrow night, and I didn't know if I should say something, or just bring some chickpeas in my purse, lol.

Re: Do you tell people your (if any) dietary restrictions?

  • I know exactly how you feel and I have no idea what the answer is. In the cases where I have told ahead, I end up feeling like an a$$ for being demanding or whatever, even if they say it's no problem.

Hmm.. I think whether I speak up or not might be somewhat dependent on how many other people will be there. If it's just DH and me being invited to dinner at someone's house, it seems a little more appropriate? If it's a big group, then I hate to cause changes that might affect everyone else, and it's also a little easier to hide that I'm just picking around and eating what I can.

  • I usually don't have an issue because my diet allows for me to plan ahead and eat not quite as healthy for things like this. However, I think the best approach is to say something like "I just wanted to let you know that I'm a vegetarian so I'm going to bring something to share. Just wanted to let you know." This way you let them know but also don't "put them out." Then they can choose whether to alter their menu/tell you not to worry about bringing something or just accept your offer.

  • I would let them know, I can't imagine anyone having a problem with that.
  • When I eliminated dairy from my diet, I would just bring something that I could eat.

  • If I were hosting someone with dietary restrictions, I would absolutely want to know. Like my grandmother can't eat dairy, and she really hates to tell you that and will actually eat it and make herself sick to avoid upsetting you. I would so much rather know ahead of time.
