Worst/Scariest Night of my Life

Last night was terrible!

We had a DR appt for Jeff at 5:45 the DR didn't come into the room until 7:20 (absolutely freaking rediculous) so by that point Brynn had enough sitting around and was walking around the room playing with her toys eating goldfish. No problem there... until she stumbled. She fell face first and bumped her cheek then her forehead. She screamed pretty good so I picked her up because I didn't want her bother the DR and Jeff while they were talking. Jeff asked if she was ok as I was checking her over and said yes. Then all of a sudden she stopped breathing her eyes closed and she went limp in my arms. I did a finger sweep to make sure she wasn't choking on a goldfish (nope) and as I was yelling help Jeff grabbed her from me and as he took her she jostled enough that she snapped out of it and took a breath. Then she took a super deep breath again and held it to the point that she stopped breathing again. So Jeff's Dr took her and started to lay her down (my guess is to do cpr) and then she started breathing and screaming again. She wanted me right away and just sat in my arms screaming bloody murder for 10 minutes. Yawning the whole time.

I called the pedi and he said the "medical term" for it is a stop breathing episode. He said it isn't uncommon for kids her age to do when they are throwing a temper tantrum or are very scared. He said to keep an eye on her today and make sure it doesn't happen again but that it sounds like she is totally fine.

It was seriously the worst night of my life. I have cried like 15 times just thinking about it. She is totally fine and was last night about 15 minutes after the fact. I hope no one else ever experiences something like that. I had a nice long talk with Brynn this morning and told her that she isn't allowed to stop breathing until she is really really really really really really really really old and I'm not around to see it.

Re: Worst/Scariest Night of my Life

  • OMG that is so scary :(

I would call your pedi and talk about it just to be on the safe side. My cousin's little girl had a suspected seizure at around age 4 (she's totally fine and 10 now). They did a full EEG etc workup, and nothing was found, the whole episode was pretty similar. If I recall correctly, the docs told them she was probably overstimulated (she was at a bday party).

ETA: nevermind, just saw the "stop breathing episode" was from your pedi (nice term, hah). I'm glad she's ok. eeeeek. goodness I am stressed over it for you.

  • First, waiting an hour and a half in a dr room is absurd.  Did the DR even apologize for the wait? Yeesh, I'd be POed.

And YIKES!!! Super scary scenario with B.  I think that even though the pedi gave you a "diagnosis," I'd still take her in to get checked out.

    ((hugs))

I'm glad to hear Brynn is ok, but man, she better not do that to you again!

  • Oh my gosh Paige, that is so scary!!  I'm so glad Brynn is ok and I feel lucky that it happened at the DR's office.  I can't imagine seeing something like that home alone or something.

I hope she's fine today and it was an isolated incident!

  • Thanks ladies. We stayed home a couple extra hours this morning to make sure she was ok before heading to MILs. We told her about it all and she was ok with watching her today so we felt ok leaving her since she was acting normal.

I gotta say... can't wait to pick her up tonight though.

  • scary! I used to babysit for a kid who did this. I think he was like two? He was not very verbal and I think it was like if he was frustrated or upset he'd hold his breath til he passed out, then of course once he passed out his body took over and he'd breathe again. His parents warned me but it was still REALLY scary when he did it to me!

glad B is ok though :-) Did J get any answers/plans from his doctor's appt?

  • OMG how terrifying.  I can't imagine seeing M do that.  I'm glad it happened while you were in a Dr's office.

Like the little boy Claire mentioned, I used to hold my breath when I got frustrated or pissed off until I passed out when I was little.  My mom just knew as freaky as it was I'd start breathing as soon as I passed out.  I REALLY hope M isn't like that!

How is Brynn now?  Does she have a booboo from her fall?

  • Claire and Heather thanks for sharing that. I was feeling ok about it after talking to the DR but hearing your stories makes me feel even better.

Brynn is fine no bumps or bruises anywhere. You wouldn't even know the girl fell!

Jeff's DR is pleased with the improvements he has been making and wants to try what he is doing a bit longer. If after a few more months his neck pain isn't getting any better he is probably going to go to a new orthopedic Dr. His aching everywhere is getting better so that is helping a bit. Plus with him working so many hours now he doesn't have much time to think about it.

  • That sounds so awful and traumatizing. I am so glad she's ok but I bet you won't forget that horrible feeling.
  • How scary! I am glad everything is okay..
  • P, I was almost in tears reading this!! SO happy everything is okay and I hope neither of you ever have to go through that again!!
