Re: Random military questions:

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base? Usually.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? Usually it's a lease. So once your lease is up then you can. I live in privatized housing. Our lease was one year. Now that our lease is done, we can continue to live on base or move at any time without losing our deposit.

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? So far... they've done it twice in two years.

How often has your DH been deployed? 0 times so far....

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? Yes....for the most part. Our smallest house on this base is three bedrooms so you would receive a three bedroom house like us childless people. BUT you won't receive your bigger house until you either have the baby or usually a note from a doctor saying you will have another child in XX months. Depends.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick? Dover or Tinker for personal reasons.

These answers will really vary from person to person. You will not receive concrete answers.

Can you paint the walls if you live on base? It depends on the base. We are in privatized housing on base, and we can paint if we'd like, but either have to repaint it to the original color, or be prepared to pay their fees for them to repaint.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? Again, this is speaking for privatized housing, but we are on a lease, so we had the option of moving after our 12 month lease was up, but if we wanted to move before that we would have fines/fees to pay.

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? The only time DH has had back pay coming was when we got married, and they adjusted his BAH, and we knew it would be a pay period or two before that correction was made. Other than that, to my knowledge, he's never had pay issues.

How often has your DH been deployed? He hasn't yet, because of the job he's coded into.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? Normally, if they have the space available, but I believe in most cases it would mean going back on the waiting list, so there's no guarantee.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick? Personally, I'd want to go to one of the bases in WY or CO because they are the closest to our families.

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base? I'd imagine it differs from base to base.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? Usually it's a lease.

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? This is completely a case by case basis. Ours has been maybe once or twice in 3 years.

How often has your DH been deployed? Two back to back ones in the two years we've been here.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? No clue, but I'd imagine it depends on availability.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick?  Nellis, but we're from Vegas.

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base? never thought about it...

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? after your lease is up

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? never had this happen...

How often has your DH been deployed?  hasnt yet, although he is switching to something that he'll probably depoly a lot. Depends on your MOS/AFSC/whatnot. There are some women here who have deployed as well, you may want to switch that to be more inclusive.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? I dont know. It depends on base and rank I think. We lived in O housing on our last base and everyone that was CGO got the same size house... I think enlisted was different though

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick? right now (next base), somewhere near where ever I get in for grad school, after that Hawaii or Germany would be lovely. (ETA- I missed the "US" part. oh well)

  • I haven't lived on base since I was ten, so I can't answer those ones...

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay?  In the three years that I've known my husband, they've never messed up his pay.  We got back pay when we got married, but that was just because of the processing time.

How often has your DH been deployed?  Five times, and he's dying to go back again.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick?  We're tired of F.E. Warren (Wyoming) so we'd like to go somewhere bigger...we'd like Scott because it is big and my family is there.  I also loved Nebraska (Offutt).

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base?
-Depends on the rules of that particular community.  Usually YES

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing?
-When your lease is up or if you get orders

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay?
-Never happened to us...at least so far

How often has your DH been deployed?
-Gotten deployment orders more times than I can count, but hasn't been deployed.  For one reason or another they were cancelled

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base?
-Depends on the rules of the housing community

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick?
-Eh.  I've learned that happiness in a certain place has little to do with where you are geographically.  We're in the Rockies (amazingly beautiful) and we hate it b/c of the unit.  Thank goodness we're leaving in 2.5 months.

  • The answers given here entirely depend upon the branch of service, MOS/AFSC, and number of deployments also vary based on how long each person has been in (obviously someone who's been in ten years may have had more opportunities to deploy than someone who's been in three years, BUT, if the person who's been in ten years is in a job that doesn't deploy often, the person with three years in service may have deployed more).  It just depends.

Can you paint the walls if you live on base?  Depends on if it's privatized or run by military, but in my experience, tenants can paint provided they paint it back to the original color.  The Self-Help shop on base even provides the paint and supplies for you to turn it back.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing?  There is a lease, so if you choose to live on base, you normally have to finish out the year you signed the lease for.  Then you can move off base at your own expense (the military won't pay for that move).

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay?  Rarely.  My pay has been messed up the last few times I PCSd, but I budget accordingly so it isn't a huge deal.

How often has your DH been deployed? He's leaving for his sixth.  I've been deployed once.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base?  It depends upon availability. Children of opposite sex can share a room until the oldest reaches six years old, according to the DoD standard.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick?  This entirely depends upon the branch of service and which bases have openings for my job.

Is your husband considering enlisting?  Which branch?

  • My husband is Army so...

Can you paint the walls if you live on base? I've always been told we could, but we would have to paint them back before moving out.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? Once your "lease" is up.

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? I can only think of 1 time in the last 6 years they messed up my husbands BAH.

How often has your DH been deployed? My husband has deployed once in 6 years, but that's not the norm, he was in a tradoc unit for 3 years and is back in one now.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? It depends, some will say they can share a room up to I think 4 years old. You would get put on the wait list for a 3 bedroom, so you would have to wait.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick? Fort Campbell, KY or Fort Benning, GA.

  •  Living at the kmcc in germany. Housing you have to prime the walls after painting before leaving.

I haven't tried to Move off post, But we were put on the waiting list and had to move ours selves from a two br to a three br apartment after my second dd was born

First duty station. So I don't know where I would like to go next.

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base? This varies not only from base to base but throughout housing communities on the same base also. There are only a few communities on our base that allow you to paint even though they are all owned by the same company.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? After your lease is up you can move off base, but you usually can't switch on base communities just because you want to.

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? H's pay has never been jacked up in 3 years.

How often has your DH been deployed? Once. Would've been twice but he had to have back surgery so he missed the first one.

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? This also depends. If you are living in a community that is only one bedroom you qualify for a second bedroom when you have a kid.

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick? Are you looking for a specific branch answer here?

  • Can you paint the walls if you live on base? No idea since we've never lived on post.

Can you move if you don't like the on base housing? See above

How often is it that they mess up pay and you get back pay? DH's pay has never been messed up in the 8.5 years we've been married.

How often has your DH been deployed? Once

If we have a 2nd child while in the military, would they give us a bigger house/apt if we were living on base? No idea

If you had your pick of a US base, which would you pick?  We're very happy where we are (Ft. Bliss) but if we had to move I'd go back to the DC area since we've lived there before and have a lot of friends in the area.

Thanks for all your responses!! My DH is considering enlisting in the Army, we've talked to a recruiter a few times now and are in the process of enlisting, but DH has a finger 'disability' I guess it would be called, so he has to see an Army doc first. However this was more for fun, I understand answer would be different etc. but I had some random questions so I thought I could get a good variety of answers!! :-) Thanks everyone for playing!!
