NYC Holiday

Hello Nesties! I'm getting ready to go to NYC in december and a bit concerned about the weather; I'm used to warm weather. I need some advice as to what clothes to bring or need to buy. I own a brown coat,  a purple and a blue ski jacket, and turtlenecks (not a very glamourous, but I need to keep warm! lol!)

Thanks for your help, and Happy Holidays!

Re: NYC Holiday

  • i like to layer  so i can take on off sometimes if i get warm. i wear mostly camis, and sweaters for winter. also make sure you have, hat gloves. i would also check  weather beforehand and if it calls for snow/ bring a waterproof shoe/boot etc. get  slushy. warm socks and a scarf too.

    have fun, beautiful in dec

  • I'm originally from New York and worked 5 1/2 years in New York City - you're going to love the holiday season in New York City - it's just magical!!!

If you're someone who gets cold easily (like me), I would suggest lots of layers - turtlenecks w/ sweaters or sweatshirts.  Make sure you have gloves, a scarf, and a good warm coat too.  Coats are usually a little longer than jackets and I would suggest the coat if you're going to spend a lot of time outside/walking.  It will help keep your upper legs warmer than a jacket than ends at your waist/hips.  Just a thought.  I was never worried about my head or ears, but if you're sensitive maybe some earmuffs.

Enjoy your trip and the magic of New York at Christmastime! Smile

  • And just a helpful hint: despite the wonder of it all, the pick-pockets are out in full force, especially around the popular tourist sites.  Be sure to keep your purse close to you, and make sure it's not an easy one to get in to.  If you tend to "get caught up in the magic" of the sites and sounds (or are just oblivious at times), you may want to help yourself by wearing a purse that you can sling across your body and actually wear your coat OVER it.

And the wind can be fierce at times--whipping through the skyscrapers, so you'll definitely find it helpful if you have tall boots or thin long johns that you can wear under your pants as well.

But, then again, with this heat wave going on on the east coast, who knows what December will bring!  I'd just check the weather and see what the temp will be like.

  • LAYER- try to find long sleeved undershirts specifically for cold weather- I think cuddliduds makes these in thin fleece as well as long john type leggings to wear under jeans.  We moved to NYC after we got married, his family is here and I visited last Christmas through New Years.  The wind is bitter cold so anything wind proof is good.  Tall boots that are fleece lined or fur lined are good too. You NEED a hat!  neck socks and scarves and anything to cover your ears!  Stay warm!
