Experiences in Bowie?

Without giving away too much info, I am looking for a decent, safe area with good access (to go to NOVA) and also to Meade area.

I posted last week about Silver Spring, AACO and for right now, I don't see that happening. I love AACO but it is not meant to be at this point.

So tell me about Bowie if you have lived there, what you like/dislike, and any good rental neighborhoods you can mention (bonus if there is a little yard for the dog).

I'm more concerned about how it would be going to NOVA, I already know about the commute to Meade area.

Re: Experiences in Bowie?

  • Others may disagree, but I grew up in Bowie and you couldn't pay me to move back there.

Personally, I think the area is going downhill fast. I'd definitely stay far away from South Bowie (south of RT 50). If you do decide to reside there and commute to NOVA, I know nothing about what the beltway would be like but Rt 50 can be a bear sometimes when there is an accident, which is at least once a week. But you can always work your way around an hit the beltway via 214, if you know before getting onto Rt 50.  Once you get on RT 50 your stuck till you are about 2 miles from the exits to the beltway.

  • I would suggest Crofton over Bowie.  It's not much further up 301.  You can also take 50 to NY Ave and then to 395 to Virginia. That route would probably be better than going the Beltway.  But I guess it would depend where in VA you were working.
  • I'm trying to avoid Crofton for personal reasons :)

But thanks for the info so far. My current places has been broken into once and the building again last week. I'd like to not have that happen again...Waldorf is going down hill too.

But yea, I was thinking Bowie right by the shopping and stadium area. I'm also looking at a newer development in PG right off 95 right now too (over by the PG animal shelter).

  • Ditto pp's, I would look at Crofton or Odenton over Bowie. I've never lived in Bowie but my Dad grew up around there and it has definitely changed. My DH used to run a restaurant in the Bowie Town Center and they are always having problems in that shopping center with carjackings and robberies, even in the daytime. Someone tried to carjack my DH with a knife one day in broad daylight but he managed to hit his key alarm and it scared the guy off. I should also mention that my DH is 6'5" and about 250lbs. He also used to get death threats from crazy customers trying to start trouble and him and his employees would have to get police escorts to their cars b/c the people would wait outside all night. This would happen at least every 2 weeks, not kidding.
  •  I have never lived in Bowie, but I never would. IMO.

I used to commute to Arlington from Odenton and it would take me anywhere from 1hr to 2hrs. It's only 27 miles, but traffic gets backed up. If you have flex time at your job, then it isn't bad at all.

    Good luck!

    Oh great.

See this is my issue. SO works in NOVA (Mt. Vernon area, right off the bridge). I work near Meade.

We're pretty much in a sh!!ty spot when it comes to "where are we going to live." But we both agree we want to move in 4 months when our lease is up.

    URGH

  • The last straw for my parents was both of their cars getting broken into one night, while a marked PG Co cop car was parked across the street. The officer lived across the street and was home.  The person stole nothing, just went through everything. My parents had just bought one of the vehciles that evening and it wasn't even on insurance yet.

I think North Bowie, its better, but still not somewhere I'd want to live. About 5 or 6 years ago, and elderly woman was carjacked around noon at the Burger King.

While these things can happen in any area, you just happen to see more and more of it happening in Bowie.

When we moved down here almost 3 years ago from Philadelphia, we looked at some apartments in this exact area.  They had gotten nice reviews online and for the most part, we liked what we saw.  We decided to go home and think about it.  I made one last check of reviews online only to see a ton of brand new reviews speaking of armed carjackings and armed break ins at the apartment complex.  We called the guy in the sales office and asked him about them.  He was reluctant to tell us but fessed up and said, yes, there was a recent string of crime in the area.

We thanked him for a time and turned our searches to Annapolis.

  • I grew up in Crofton and still live there and that would obviously be my first choice. Bowie....just isn't what it used to be. Have you thought of Piney Orchard? If you are looking to rent I usually see TH's or even some of the condos up for private rent on Remax, and even though it's close to Crofton, it's not Crofton.

  • op - have you looked at Hyattsville or College Park?  That might not be too bad of a commute for your SO to Alexandria.  You would need to be careful about where you moved, but there are some cute areas around Hyattsville - also some super sketchy areas obviously.

  • I have not considered Hyattsville or CP. Do you have any specific neighborhoods I can take a look at? I have thought about CP before, but I thought it was worse than Bowie.

CP isn't bad, it's just full of students. You could look at the University Park neighborhood. It's very nice in there, like a little hidden gem. Outside of that, the rest of CP is rentals throughout the other neighborhoods with students.

I was going to suggest University Park as well. Also I have a friend who lives in Old Greenbelt (mainly townhouses that are all co-ops) and she and her DH love it. Her sister moved into the same community. google Greenbelt Homes Inc. for more info.

  • coworker bought a townhouse in beechfield, they like it.
  • I would avoid Bowie. I would rather look into Davidsonville, which is right next to it

  • I haven't read the other responses. However, we house-hunted significantly in Bowie and Upper Marlboro, and ended up in Crofton instead.

I dont' know if you're looking to rent or buy, but the property taxes are significantly higher in Prince George's County than in Anne Arundel, and Crofton has a better reputation (for resale).

you said that AACo wasn't meant to be right now...did you look in Crofton? Bowie and Crofton are so close to one another. I live in a townhome community off Route 3 near Waugh Chapel and we have homes both for rent and sale in our little community, so please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
