Another name post: how'd you get your name? How about DH?

My name is the feminine of my dad's name.  Real creative, right?  My mom had always wanted to name her daughter Carmen (after the opera; she's a big music & theater nut like me) but thought it would sound too ethnic with my dad's Latino last name.

DH has a Bengali first name even though he's Tamil.  It confuses most Indians until he explains he was born when his dad was working in Calcutta.  One of his dad's coworkers suggested the name & he really liked it.

Re: Another name post: how'd you get your name? How about DH?

  • I was named after Farrah Fawcett's character in Charlie's Angels. My mother claims it's the only time she heard the name Jill. Apparently Jack & Jill didn't make an impression on her. She really wanted to name me Roxanne though. The one thing I am truly thankful for my father is his veto of that one.

H was named Matthew because of it's meaning - gift from God. MIL/FIL were trying for seven years to have a child and finally after repeated surgeries she got pregnant with H.

  • My great great grandmother was Sarah Amanda, I got it reversed. DH was given a spite name. His dads sister suggested John, but MIL didn't want for her to name the baby. So she named him Johann and just called him Jon. I just realized I'm not sure how to spell his legal first name because I've never used it.
  • My parents named me after the song...."Sarah....Sarah....storms are brewin in your eyes..."

Le sigh.  My mom wanted to name me either Jennalee (So NMS, my sisters are Jessalynn and Jaime so she wanted to keep the J thing going)  or Rhiannon which I love.

I am not sure why DH's parents went with Deven.  MIL always jokes she was going to name him Thor since it rhymes so well with our last name...

  • My mom and dad heard my name on the tv show "The Waltons" and really liked it, so I was named Erin. My mom originally wanted to name me Whitney, but my dad vetoed it and I am so glad.

I am not sure why DH was named Jeremy. I do know that his middle name David is his cousin's name and all 5 of her sons have middle names after family members.

  • My dad picked Kimberly.  He just thought it was a beautiful name.  My mom picked my middle name, which is Ann, after her older sister who thought she may not be able to have children (she later did.)

DH is the 8th Walter in a row, all with different middle names.  Oddly enough, DH's dad didn't care if the tradition was passed on but DH's mom pushed for it instead.  The jury is still out on whether this child will have the formal first name of Walter or not.

    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • Mom mom just liked my name. No fun story. MN was: Dad was sitting in a field thinking of what he wanted my mn to be and a white dove landed near him. He swears by the story, I think he was h!gh.

DH has his dad's first name and his mn is his mom's maiden name.

  • I was named Megan after the character "Meggie" in The Thorn Birds - the book came out while my Mom was pregnant.  She always intended to call me "Meg" or "Meggie" and it never happened.

DH got his name from a cousin of his Mom's who passed away as a teen - his name was Michael James and they flipped the order.  FIL is also James so I think that had something to do with it, though MIL doesn't say so.

  • My mom always told me I was named after the Boston song, "Amanda", but if you research it, that song didn't come out until a year after I was born ....

    Eh, hem, mom!

Mike was named after his dad, Mike. :)

  • My mom claims she thought of my name, but my dad was a big Hopalong Cassidy fan as a kid and used to write him letters... so that may have come into play.

The way Ryan got his name is my total nightmare.  MIL had c-sections for both kids and IN BOTH CASES, FIL wrote a name different than what they had agreed on on the birth certificate.

So, Ryan was supposed to be Matthew Robert, and when MIL came to, she thought she had a son named Matthew.  FIL informed her that he decided to name him Ryan Whitney instead (which means "little king of the white island").

MIL tells that story whenever she is annoyed at FIL, which is often.

(SIL is Laci Nicole, but was supposed to be Sarah Elizabeth).

  • My family calls me Llora Jean, which is after both of my grandmothers.

DH is the third, both first and mn. He has already said there won't be a 4th. His sisters were devastated.

  • As far as I know, my parents just liked my name.  They didn't decide on it until 2 weeks before I was born, and I was 2 weeks late, so if I had been born on time or earlier, I would have been their first choice, Autumn Brooke.

Not sure about DH's, but I think his parents just liked the name Tyler.

  • I was supposed to be a Sara but then a Sara tried to shoot President Ford so I became Amy--it was very popular at the time.  DH says there is no story behind his name.

  • I was named after my mom's best friend from HS, Nikki.  I have no idea why my parents decided to give me a more formal name of Nicole though since they never intended to call me Nicole. To this day, I hate being called Nicole because it's not my name, even though legally it is.

I have no idea where DH's name came from.

  • Cassidy - that is crazy-cakes.  If I was MIL i'd have been like "that was cute, we're getting new birth certificates".  Though, at least Ryan fared better in the name department than his sister, I think :(
  • Well I was born in the almost-mid eighties, with a name usually reserved for slightly older women, so y'all can probably guess which John Mellencamp song I was named after.

DH was named after his grandfather, which I find really sweet. His middle name was a family name that's been in each generation, but I can't remember if it was his mom or dad's side.

This is why I have genuine fears that Ryan is going to pull the same stunt and I'm going to end up with his "joke" names (Zavier Rufus (yes, the Z is intentional) and Polly Esther).

Anyway, stories like these make me look at MIL and wonder how she's been married to this man for 45ish years.  This is typical behavior from him-he gets what he wants.  Blech.

Oh, and the kids I coach call Ryan "Whitney" cause they think it's hilarious.

  • My parents were convinced I was a boy and had no girl names picked out. Close to my mom's due date, my grandfather said "so when is Colleen getting here"? It stuck.

  • I don't think my first name has any significant meaning other than my parents liked it. Middle name is my mom's middle name (and her grandmother's middle name). My brother (Brandon Mills) is after our great-grandfather, Don Mills (whose middle name was his mother's maiden name).

Also don't know about Paul's first name. They probably just liked it because it was a good strong Catholic name. His middle name, Robert, is my FIL's first name.

  • Dad wanted to name me Nikki Crystal. Mom said it sounded like a stripper name, so they went with Crystal Nicole. Good one, mom.

DH- not sure... Anthony is has meaning in Catholicism (sp?)? Jerome is his mn after his god-dad.

  • My name is Theresa Eileen, with a nn of Teri.  My first name is my mother's confirmation name, and always says she named me that because it is "such a beautiful name."  They gave me my nn, which is what I go by and always have, right after they named me.  Eileen is a family name (great grandma's first name, grandma's mn, mom's mn) and I plan to use this as a mn if we have a girl.

I think DH's parents just liked the name Jared.  His mn is Joseph, and is a family name.

"A little ditty about Jack and Dehko!!"  JK.  That is actually my go-to karaoke song with one of my BFFs.  :)

My mom was going to name me Lynn and decided that sounded too old so she named me Lynsey.  She was 18 at the time and had no clue how to spell it so I go that awful spelling.  LOL.  Needless to say - I never had personalized pencils.  Although the few things I did have personalized I absolutely LOVED.  My middle name is Kaye.  My dad's mom's middle name is Kay (she goes by Kay).  I have no idea why they added an 'e' to to my middle name, but I love it.  I hope to be able to use it for any girls we have.

MIL said she just liked the name Justin for dh.  No good story there.  Although his middle name (Richard) is his dad's first name.

  • My story is boring. My mom always loved the name Tiffany, and my dad chose my MN- Nicole. Not named after/for anyone or anything. :)

DH was named Daniel because his parents wanted to use a biblical name. Oddly enough, his sisters name isn't biblical. Whatever!

  • No great reason for Melissa, it was just the only one both my patents could agree on & then they both thought Ann would work well with it.  DH is Paul James after his dad who is James Paul.
  • My first name is Elizabeth after my dad's sister who died when she was 12. Elizabeth was also my mom's confirmation name. I have been called Beth since the day I was born though. My MN, Jean, is my mom and grandma's MN.

I'm guessing DH's got his name Matthew, because it's a good biblical name. His MN Loren, is his grandpa's name and his dad's MN.

If we have a girl we're going to name her Lauren Jean after our MNs.

If we have a boy, he will get FIL's name as his MN (Michael).
