Ring Appraisal Discussion (again)

So, I stopped by my jeweler a few days ago to see if I needed to get my engagement ring appraised again after our discussion about insurance coverage on here. I need to get my wedding band appraised anyway b/c I never got it insured. She asked me how long I have had my engagement ring since it had already been appraised and I told her it had been over 4 years. She said the price of diamonds had gone up, but it wasn't as bad for princess cuts, so she told me not to worry about it especially since it hadn't been 6 years. She said round cuts are seeing the biggest increases and she would have suggested that I get it re-appraised if it was round.

I left a little confused b/c I don't understand how the raw price of diamonds has anything to do with how someone ends up cutting the diamond. I understand some cuts are more expensive than others but I assumed if the price on diamonds went up... then the price of diamonds went up. Ya know?

Re: Ring Appraisal Discussion (again)

  • If you know the 'stats' of your ring do a search on Blue Nile or similar to see what they cost now.  Is there a large difference?

I didn't even think of that. Good idea! I'm sure I have the information from the first appraisal. I shall do that when I get home.

I'm not eager to pay to have it appraised but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be left high and dry if I lost my ring either.

  • Hmm, mind is round.

It's currently at the jeweler (I broke a prong and almost lost my diamond), I am having it appraised while I am there ... I be sure to post what kind of difference they make.

  • Mine is round, too (and based on updated appraisal, had apparently more than doubled in value). That's really weird--I agree that I don't see why the shape it's cut would make any difference. I thought price was just based on quality, color, size. Interesting.
