Working moms - morning schedule?

How do you do your mornings? I go back on Monday and am trying to plan out our schedule. Dh will be getting ready at same time. I will have to pump. We will have to wake cate up as she normally sleeps till 730. I guess i am just looking for any tips that you might have.

Re: Working moms - morning schedule?

  • When both of us worked mornings, H had to be at work at 6 am and I had to be there at 8 am. Because of the setup of our last place, I would shower in the evenings as I didn't want Ella downstairs (mold and sewage) nor did I want to leave her that far away. I'd nurse Ella around 6 if she was up. If she wasn't awake by 6:30, I'd pump then. I'd wash pump parts and get ready for my day. I'd let Ella sleep as late as possible then change her and take her to my mom's/day care with a freshly "squeezed" milk. If she was up to nurse, I'd let her play while I got ready. Honestly, we snuggled a lot too in the mornings. I never did my hair or make-up then. There were plenty of rushed mornings, but it's so worth it.

    Tips:
Have your pump bag ready to go the night before - clean pump parts, enough bags/bottles for the day, something to remind you of Cate if you aren't used to pumping so that it's easier for you to pump
Lay out both your clothes and Cate's clothes the night before
Have a cooler/bag of breastmilk ready to go the night before (like all 3 bottles in one spot)
Get her diaper bag ready the night before if you take one to daycare
    Keep a low-maintenance look
If you can/don't mind, shower the night before. I find it just makes life easier. :)

  • ditto lots of what sept said.

I made one spot in the fridge for a little cooler for bottles.  We packed it the night before.  always in the same spot, always the same cooler.

Had pump bag ready at night and by the door to go out to the car.

Lunch packed to go to work in the cooler, in the fridge before I went to bed.

Pick out your clothes and Cate's the night before.  I found a 5 bin hanging thing (hangs from closet rod-we don't use it, so if you want it, it's yours!)  Then I picked out a weeks worth of outfits each weekend, to make it easier.

I got up at 5:45, took my shower, ate breakfast, did my hair, nursed William, got dressed, grabbed my purse, pump, lunch and left to get to work at 7:45.  DH took William to daycare. DH got up at 6:50 when I was out of the bathroom, took his shower, got dressed and left with William.

We use cloth diapers, so I always made sure the new ones for the next day were packed in the bag, hanging on the back door for DH to grab on the way out the door.

Weekends I did laundry, meal planned and grocery shopped.

Don't put your work shirt on until you leave.  Or put it on in the car.  Leave a pj/hoodie on until after you've gotten clear of the baby.  Have a spare shirt in the car for just in case.

If you can, have a spare set of pump parts at work.  Membranes, bags, bottles, the works.  Just in case.

The first few days will suck.  Chaos and lateness will reign supreme.  :(  Have some coupons for takeout, or crock pot meals for supper so you can maximize your night routine the first week.

Practice your routine on Sunday for getting ready to see if it works.  I practiced on Tues and Wed, then went back to work on a Thursday.  I don't remember anything I did the first month.  I was tired, sick, and an emotional mess.

  • Like the others said, do as much the night before as you can.  I don't really have to worry about laying clothes out because I wear scrubs and Reese wears a uniform to school.  I do lay out Grier's clothes, though.  We cd, so I have the diapers ready.  I make all bottles the night before and make sure I have all of my pump parts clean.

We pack lunches and make coffee the night before. The diaper bag is packed, too.

When I pumped in the morning, I would wake up, pump, shower and then get the baby up.

Plan for things to take twice as long.  I wish I was kidding about this. Lol!

As your dcp what stuff you can take extra of, so you don't have to worry about taking it everyday.  We take extra wipes, food, etc.

And I agree with erin about the shirt.  Never fails, I end up going to work with something on my scrubs.  (and I have to wear black :/)

Don't forget to take a pic of your sweet girl to put on your desk :) The first week or two are crazy.  But you quickly fall into a routine and it becomes your new normal.

  • YES! To the night before, I've learned to shower at night, and like it more, straighening my hair vs, having to dry/straighten is SO much easier!

When El was still taking her early morning bottle, I'd get her up around 5/5:30 and she's have that, I'd get her ready, then I'd let he play in her crib. Just make sure Cate is already before you are. Because you know you can rush and look decent if you have to. Do you know what I mean?

AND I'm here today! So if you need to chat, just email me:)
