FDA rejects Avastin for use against Metastatic Breast Cancer

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/11/18/avastin-rejected-for-use-in-metastatic-breast-cancer/?hpt=hp_t1

My Mom was on this treatment as a last resort. It made things so so much worse. I can only hope and pray that more work is done with this treatment so that it is more effective and has less nasty side affects.

ETA: edited because apparently tonight I don't know the difference between effect and affect.

  • The FDA approval process really intrigues me.  Whether it's Avastin v.2 or something else, I do hope something better comes along.

Seriously. As a biology major I was super excited when they said they were using this on my Mom. Its biding agent is albumin which is large component of human blood. Meaning less toxic bonding agents are used and less toxins are going into the body. Its a lot more impactful of a drug in a smaller package. The infusion only takes 20 minutes. Which means you don't have to spend a huge portion of your day getting a treatment like with paxlitale and some of the other drugs.

The drug itself is suppose to decrease the growth of new blood vessels in bones in order to "suffocate" the cancer cells into dying off. The idea works really, but when you actually use it its awful. It causes CHF and several other conditions. Its suppose to increase bone strength, but in my Mom's case it really didn't help. My mom was only able to receive the Avastin infusions 3 times because of her counts but they did so much damage. I can only imagine the affects if she had had more of them.
