Tanksgiving

What are your plans? Do you have a favorite recipe? Traveling?

I am staying home and cooking our first Thanksgiving dinner together. Hoping it goes well since we're not very good cooks. Also thinking about stopping by the famiy's house which is only 25 minutes away, and visiting.

Oh and just a rant. I watch "Chopped", and I was excited for the Thanksgiving special...so dissapointing. Most of all of the contestants were from a different country so they wern't too familiar with the norm Turkey day. Blahhh. The one girl kept saying "Tanks-giving" hence my title spelling Stick out tongue

Re: Tanksgiving

  • I've never heard of Chopped, good show?

This year we're heading back to or hometown for a good 4 days, which I look forward to. We'll spend thanksgiving with DH's family and then Friday with my family. Hopefully after that we can just relax.

Then Sunday we're heading home to decorate the house for Christmas :)

  • We're staying home for TGiving this year, it's going to be a small gathering of just my grandma, dad, DH and I since my brother and mom will be in hawaii (tough life huh?). We're actually just going out to a buffet thing for thanksgiving meal, but I also bought a tofurkey to make that day so that DH and I have leftovers for the week. :)
  • Ooh, I love Chopped! I haven't seen the last several episodes though. I'm sad that the Thanksgiving episode sounds like a letdown though.

We will be driving to Georgia to stay with DH's family for Thanksgiving which should be pretty fun. We are taking them their Christmas presents to open then too, because we won't be getting to see them for Christmas.

My favorite recipes are this one for pumpkin pie ( I froze pumpkin puree from our Halloween pumpkins) and I have a great one for green bean casserole, but that one is handwritten.

  • We will be at my aunt's (down the street from our house) from around 10am - 3pm and then we will drive 2 hours to the town Keith is from and stay there until around 10pm and then drive home.  I look forward to the first part.  I do not look forward to the second part.  :-)

  • We spend the day with DH's family (my family just now made their plans and I can't ask his family to wait that long to make theirs) and then Sunday we'll most likely eat a dinner with my parents.

My  favorite Thanksgiving recipes are cranberry salad and pumpkin pie.  I make the cranberry salad for every Thanksgiving and Christmas and was really planning to make pumpkin pie this year, but my mother in law gave us a pretty complete menu after I sent her what I was making including the two veggies I'd decided to make and pumpkin pie.  I made pumpkin cupcakes for FIL's birthday and DH suggested I make them and homemade applesauce.  So I guess that's the menu

  • Will be heading 'home' were both from the same small town so it's kind of nice everyone is right there. Will be eating Turkey with DH family (they asked first) so it will be us, his parents, and the grandparents. so It should be pretty relaxed! then I've got to swing by my Brothers house that's were my sisters and nana with being thanksgiving to say hello. Then my dads house to have some pie and tea with him and my step-mom.

We use to eat three meals one at each house we had to stop over at....which is a lot of food for one day. so this year went with the who ever asked first plan. I can't wait for the candied yams and cranberry sauce! and cold turkey sandwich's for the next few days after!!

Good luck driftingangel on your first time cooking the meal!

  • We are doing what has been done in my family for the last few years or so: We go to my SIL's mom's house.  Usually, SIL's stepdad and stepsister go visit family a couple hours away, but her mom stays here.  Obviously, SIL doesn't want her mom to spend the day alone.  Also, since both sets of "inlaws" (my parents and her parents) have always gotten along well, we usually do a couple holidays (this one and Easter) all together instead of my brother and his family having to split their time between both sides or choose one over the other.  It works out very well, because we all contribute to the meal.

Felix and I will leave a little early to go to his aunt's for a family gathering, but we're all in the same city so it's convenient.  We'll also have his mom and maybe a couple of his brothers over on Saturday since we just moved into a house and would like to host something.

My favorite recipe is for pumpkin pie and it goes like this: Pick up the phone, dial Miller's Dutch Kitchen, order pie, pick up pie the day before Thanksgiving.  Comes out perfect every time!  Wink

  • We missed Canadian Thanksgiving this year (October 9th) because we were on our trip to NYC.  So, I missed the turkey, stuffing and gravy.  I'll have to have an extra helping at Christmas I guess :)

  • We love Chopped!  Sometimes when we are putting dinner on our plates one of us will say "3, 2, 1 and times up" and the other person throws their hands up lol.

This year we'll be going to Jason's grandparents house, which is about an hour away, to celebrate with his family.  We decided a few years ago that it's just too much driving to try to see both families on every holiday.  His family lives an hour south of us and mine lives about 15 minutes north of us, so we alternate years for Thanksgiving and Easter.  One year his family gets us, the next year mine does, etc.  We do make sure to see both families for Christmas though.
