S/O When should we mandate contraception?

I had a baby in the NICU these past couple of weeks.  The baby is mom's 4th child and mom does not have custody of any of her other children secondary to her drug abuse.  This baby will not go to mom.

Does society have a right to force contraception on women who continue to reproduce but are not capable of taking care of the children?

Re: S/O When should we mandate contraception?

  • This is an extremely sticky situation. Certainly you don't want more and more children in this position; however the only forms of mandated contraception they could use would essentially be forced sterilization IMO. I say this because the easiest to mandate/control would be an IUD or Depo. Both have the potential to lead to long term infertility issues, and I can envision sketchy doctor's becoming involved in the inappropriate removal of an IUD.

I have plenty of clients in my practice who have recovered from major drug/alcohol pasts and successfully raised children. I don't think society has the right to keep that from them. IDK

  • I completely understand where you're coming from, but I don't think there's any way we can mandate contraception, unfortunately.

My cousin is 32 years old, has given birth 6 times to early, tiny, (in some cases addicted) babies, and she's only got three of them living with her. Her oldest lives with her parents, the second lives with his paternal grandparents, the next died from falling into a manhole and drowning when he was 2 (how the hell does that happen?!), and she's got the youngest three who she's left with family on several occasions while she was missing for weeks at a time. It's ridiculous and I worry every time I see her that she'll announce she pregnant again, but there's nothing we can do to stop the insanity.

  • I think the only way you could currently do it is to force IUD implantation or Depo shots as a condition to something (like getting your welfare?).  I don't think it will ever happen though.

Example:  There was a 2yo child in Cincinnati a couple weeks ago that was stomped to death by his father.  The parents (the mother is 22yo) have 5 children, and she is pregnant with her 6th.  When they tried to take the kids out of the home after the 2yo was killed, she yelled "You can't take my kids!  Then, I won't be able to get my check!".  Both of these poor excuses for humans should be sterilized in IMHO.

I have also often joked (kinda) that they should put birth control in the water supply, and you would have to go to the doctor to take something to counteract it in order to get pregnant.  Would eliminate so many unwanted pregancies that my taxes have to pay for.

  • I really wish contraception was something that could be mandated, especially for men.

I kinda dig Sara's bc in the water idea.
