thermostat settings for NW area

Just wondering what an average thermostat setting would be around here.  We live in Auburn and have had our 2 story condo for a couple years. We've been trying to play around with the home and away settings for the thermostat so that we're not spending an arm and a leg on electric but so we're also not freezing.

We currently have it set at 65 in the evenings and 60/62 when we're asleep or not home.  Too cold or too far apart?

Re: thermostat settings for NW area

  • we keep ours at 68 during the day and 60 at night. We have a house, and we also try and turn off the heater if we are gone even for a couple of hours cause any bit helps.

  • We have a townhouse and leave our heat off. We use our gas fireplace when we are home.

  • The first year we lived here I tried using the gas fireplace and the next month that gas/electric bill was extremely high.  I think it's because we don't have a blower on our fireplace and we have ~ 20ft high vaulted ceilings in our main living space so it was having to work harder to heat the space.

  • We turn our heat off during the day. We only use the heat when we are at home and awake. I would say it's set at about 68. We sometimes use a space heater in the bedroom to heat up the room before we go to bed . We have oil heating and it's expensive. We try to conserve as much as possible.
  • We have ours set at 68-70 all the time. This apartment leaks like a sieve and takes forever to heat. We have 2 radiator heaters that shut off when the temperature gets to the set temperature and then turn back on when the temperature gets 5 degrees below the set temperature to conserve a little energy. I work during the day and H works at night so someone is always home.

  • We keep it at about 67 when we are home, 64-63 when asleep, and down to 58ish when we are gone. We also have a pellet stove that we use a ton in the winter, so the heat doesn't kick on when it's going. With the pellet stove going full blast it gets up to 76ish. Big Smile

  • We don't have central heat, so it's hard to say exactly, but our heaters in the main spaces we use are set to 67-68 when we are home/awake, and 58-60 when we are asleep or away.
