can I just burn down my house and start all over again? is that allowed?

our house should be plenty big enough for 2 adults, a toddler and a baby (on the way). but OMG, I just cannot seem to find a place for everything. While I'm really not a pack rat, we just have too much stuff. 

Does someone want to come take away all my stuff? Please?

  • I hear you.  We have as many rooms dedicated to storage as we do to living.  I don't understand why.  I think we'll probably end up getting a storage unit whenever baby #2 is a real possibility.
  • I know what you mean.  We have NO storage whatsoever and the biggest regret both DH and I have when we bought the house.  We just have 2 adults and a dog.  A 3 bedroom house, 2 car garage and we're already busting at the seams. 
  • I can send my husband over- he is an expert at getting rid of things Big Smile And, if he was at your house- then he would get off my back about the 4 boxes I have in our 20x10 storage room. Yes, the thing is practically empty but those 4 boxes are making him lose sleep at night.

  • I hear 'ya.  I honestly don't know what we'll do when we have kid #2 at some point and need to clear out another bedroom.

  • I feel the same way right now.  Our office is a disaster (and so is our "storage closet" in the basement) and I keep trying to organize it, but there's just too much stuff that we need and no enough places to put it :(

    On a related note, when we lived in Savannah, our house did catch fire, but not enough to destroy everything.  Cleaning up (even after servpro came) was a huge PITA.  So, I don't recommend going that route.

  • we have so much stuff, I have a closet completely dedicated to gifts (and, TBH, re-gifts).  It's so full, it's impossible to know what's there (lots of gift boxes and gift bags, too) and is basically un-cleanable.

    if DH wasn't so thrifty, I'd pay (bribe) you all kinds of money to come help.

    part of the problem is that there is always so much in transition. like right now, I need to move a bunch of my non-maternity hanging clothes from the closet in our bedroom to the closet in our guest bedroom. But that closet is basically filled to the brim with baby stuff that we are going to need in February. So I guess I could take those things out and just have them decorate the guest room (yuck) and put my clothes in the closet, but then it will be messy looking :-( 

    and the reason I have to take my non-maternity clothes out of my closet is because :sob:: DH and I have to start sharing a closet now! :sob::  We are moving Warner into the bedroom that was our office where DH kept all his clothes. Oy. This is uncharted territory for us and it could get ugly.

  • Aside from Baby/Maternity stuff (which has a longer value) ask "Have I used this/needed this in the last year? Do I have any existing plans for this in the future?"

    If the answer to either question is no- toss or donate. I did this and although certain things were tough to throw away, I haven't had any regrets. Mostly I have thought "wow, I really didn't need that. I can't believe I thought it was worth keeping." 

  • I'm right there with you. I feel like if you have multiple kids, then it's constant with trying to manage "stuff". Even though our house has ample space, I'm embarrassed to say that we are heading over to the IL's house today to put some stuff in *their* attic to store. Also, I'm pretty good at getting rid of stuff when we no longer need it. This year alone, I've probably sold 20 items on C-list and given away a number of boxes to the Goodwill. But with kids, it just seems like there's always more stuff coming in the door and more stuff to "turnover".

  • once you've had your last baby, you can start getting rid of baby stuff. I felt so good giving away all the baby clothes! I need to now go thru toys neither plays with and get rid of those. It's empowering to give away stuff you no longer need!
