Christopher Plummer in "Beginners"---anyone see it?

It seems like many critics are choosing Plummer as the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but oh my gosh, I found this movie SO DULL.  I like Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent, too.  I ended up fast-forwarding through 90% of it.

Anyone else see it?  Maybe it's just my bad taste?  I watch almost all the Oscar-nominated movies, but this one was too much!

Re: Christopher Plummer in "Beginners"---anyone see it?

  • Haven't seen it but I was listening to the producer of the movie on NPR yesterday and now I want to go see it!
  • I expected it to be so good. It has a great rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I heard nothing but good things about it.  90% of the prognosticators have him winning the Oscar for it, but I was so bored and thought it was such a small part.  It didn't stick out in my mind.  Then again, Beatrice Straight and Judi Dench won.

I know that he fits the central criteria for Best Supporting Actor, which is "be an old fogey." (see Alan Arkin, James Coburn, Jim Broadbent)

:-)  I like Christopher Plummer and mean that nicely.

ETA: I know Broadbent wasn't really old when he won for Iris, but he was one of the first ones I could think of in a pinch.

  • I loved the movie, but I saw it before the Oscar hype and I think that helped. I saw it at an artsy movie theater and knew it was more of a talking/thinking movie rather than a traditional hollywood film.
  • I'm all for talking and thinking... just not deadly boring to where I'd rather write a lesson plan than watch it.

I really didn't see the plot profundity in the little bit I saw, though.
