I have a dust problem...

I'm getting a little stressed. Our dogs are mostly inside. They're probably outside for a total of 1-1.5 hours a day. Our house is soooo dusty. I'm thinking it's because of the dogs (mostly because their crate area is the dustiest) I don't want to make them exclusively outdoor dogs, I like having them inside. But it gets frustrating when I dust and sweep one night and it's already time to do it again in the morning (the dining room table is already covered in dust again, the counters in the kitchen, etc.) You might think I'm exaggerating, but I'm not! It's ridiculous. I just feel like our house is so dirty. Does anyone else have this issue? Could it be partly because we have tile throughout the entire house (except bedrooms) so the dust doesn't have a place to settle into (like carpet)? Or maybe we don't bathe our dogs enough? How often do you bathe your dogs? It almost feels like the dust comes out of the air vents (the light over our dining room table is right under a vent and the light gets so dusty.) We always make sure to replace air filters when needed. Do you think we need to hire someone to clean out our air ducts? Help!! I'm so tired of dusting all the time!!!

Re: I have a dust problem...

  • I am having the same problem!  I have been wanting to try getting the ducts cleaned, but H doesn't think that's the issue.  I have also been considering getting an air purifier for the living room.  We still have carpet in the living room here, and it seems to be equally dusty in the LR as in our big formal living/dining area, which is the same size but tiled.  If you figure out any solutions, please let me know, and I will do the same!
  • I have no solution or recommendation, but just wanted to say that I have the same issue. We have one small dog and a cat, and everything is covered in dust, all the time. We've got carpet in some rooms, tile in some, and wood laminate in others, but I don't really think flooring makes a difference.

I could dust once a day and keep it under control, but who are we kidding? I'm lucky if I get to it once a week.

  • Same here.  I feel your pain.  With Lily (my 100lb shedding machine),  I'm lucky to go an afternoon with a clean house.  I am constantly wiping things down.  There's no solution except to rid your life of animals...and that isn't going to happen.  Air purifier, replacing air filters every 3 months, pledge dusting, and vacuuming under my furniture seems to help, but I still get hair/dust/dirt/dander everywhere regardless.  Maybe a Roomba?  LOL

  • Same problem... I have 3 dogs and wood floors. I can dust and then no kidding I move to another piece of furniture and look back at the first one and feel like I need to dust it again. It's a never ending battle for our house. I even got filters for the floor vents so if there was dust in the ducts it would help stop it from coming into the house. I think I need to find a puppy sitter for a weekend get a good deep clean on the house while they are gone and then maybe it would be easier to maintain. My dogs get dry skin so I dont bath them ALL the time. If they get dirty outside or something I will but they go to the groomers on a semi-regular basis.
  • Whew, glad it's not just me! Well, not glad other people have to deal with the same issue, but glad it's semi-normal.

  • My tile floors and my black furniture look the worst.  I have two short haired dogs (obviously) that live in the house and while I think they are partially to blame I think the dry weather and the Oklahoma wind have a lot to do with it.  I actually have a babysitter coming in the am just so I can clean my house and not have to worry about B being right under me.  Plus, it gives me a good way to try out a new sitter without actually leaving my house.  ;)
  • Ditto everybody else. We have 2 dogs so their hair gets everywhere, plus the dirt/dander accumulating on the end tables, mantel, tv stand, etc. It was much worse in our last rental house. I did wonder if getting the air ducts cleaned would make a difference, but since we were just renting I wasn't going to pay for it to find out.

You ladies are better about the dusting than I am. I'll spot clean the most annoying places (end tables!) about every other week, but the house only gets a full dusting when we have company coming...so almost never.

  • We have this problem too. Our pug is a ridiculous shedder and I feel like I'm constantly chasing hair balls. It doesn't help that most of our furniture is dark wood and shows any little fleck of dust. I try to dust at least once a week but it seems like an hour later it's back. I'm not sure what the solution is except living without pets.
  • I don't thinks pets are even the problem!  I don't have any inside my house and I  just dusted yesterday and it could stand to be done again!
