What to buy - 11 yr old boy
What would an 11 year old boy want for Christmas?? He's my nephew...we aren't too close. He plays hockey, hunts, watches TV. I think he has a nook (insert eye roll). He is getting to that age where I never know what to buy.
Now Catie, who is 5, I can't stop finding things to buy her!
And of course Abrahm is a whole other story.
Re: What to buy - 11 yr old boy
Once my nephew hit that age I started just giving him gift cards. For anyone else I feel they are impersonal, but he loved having the freedom of buying whatever he chose and he used it for video games, iTunes etc.
I've got to buy a 2 yr old girl a birthday gift 3 day before Xmas and this kid literally has everything. I'm so clueless on that one and I have an almost 2 year old!
As long as I felt his parents were monitoring and making sure he was reading age appropriate books with his nook, I would get him a gift card to that... I would rather he be reading than playing video games! My friend's son has a kindle and he is CONSTANTLY reading, she monitors to make sure that the books are appropriate and his vocabulary and writing are amazing for a 10 year old!
Otherwise I would do a gift card to a clothing store he likes, or one for a shoe store or the movies.
You could rebel against the nook and buy him an actual book or two. I just sat in on a class last week that was discussing the Maine Student Book Award winners.
http://efolio.umeedu.maine.edu/~masl/msba/newlist.html here is the list but a couple that I can remember that may be good for boys:
Guys Read: Funny Business - Jon Scieszka - it is an anthology of short stories by different well known authors.
Woods Runner - Gary Paulson
A Tale Dark & Grimm - Adam Gidwitz (I didn't read it so it may be too dark to be parent approved but I know it got a lot of the boys excited)
I was going to say a gift card too...I like Sweetpea's idea to get him a gift card for his nook. I'm not into e-readers for myself, but if it's encouraging him to read, then it's not a bad thing. That's kids these days
